SoundCloud debuts The Upload, a Discover Weekly-style playlist that recommends new music

SoundCloud has unveiled a new feature today to help listeners discover even more new music.  The Upload is SoundCloud's answer to the music discovery playlists that have become popular with other streaming services.

Context & Ripple Effects

SoundCloud has been building toward this for two years: after the iOS play related tracks stream in mid-2015, it launched radio-style Stations in February 2016 and then Suggested Tracks that June to surface music based on listening habits. The Upload is the capstone — a single, recurring, personalized playlist rather than scattered suggestions.

It also closes a gap against Spotify, which launched Release Radar as a weekly new-music playlist in August 2016 and whose Discover Weekly blends collaborative filtering, NLP, and raw-audio analysis. For a platform whose catalog is defined by fresh uploads, a dedicated new-music playlist is the natural home-field advantage.

First-order effects

  • SoundCloud listeners get a Discover Weekly-style entry point for new music, consolidating features previously spread across Stations, Suggested Tracks, and related-track streams into one habitual touchpoint.
  • Artists uploading to SoundCloud gain a recurring algorithmic surface for brand-new tracks, directly answering Spotify's Release Radar on the platform where new material lands first.

Second-order effects

  • Spotify's playlist playbook is now table stakes: SoundCloud matching Release Radar forces both platforms to compete on recommendation quality and freshness rather than catalog size alone.
  • For emerging artists weighing where to premiere tracks, SoundCloud can argue uploads there feed a discovery engine tuned to new music — shifting the upload-versus-streaming-platform calculus.

Third-order effects

  • If the pattern holds, the weekly personalized playlist becomes the standard discovery infrastructure across streaming, moving gatekeeping power from editorial curators to recommender systems — and making the underlying technique (as Spotify's filtering-plus-NLP-plus-audio-analysis stack shows) a core competitive asset.
  • Platforms built on user uploads, like SoundCloud, are structurally positioned to win the freshness race, since their catalogs replenish continuously at the source.

The trend: Music streaming is converging on personalized algorithmic playlists as the default discovery layer, with each service racing to match Spotify's weekly-playlist template.
