GoPro unveils Fusion, a 5.2K 360-degree spherical VR camera, slated for a commercial release at the end of 2017

The spherical camera, called Fusion, is small and wearable, but a lot of other details are a mystery.  —  GoPro's been deep into developing commercial VR capture systems for a couple years now.

Fusion is the endpoint of a two-year build-out: GoPro acquired French stitching-software firm Kolor in 2015, sketched a six-camera spherical array that same year, then shipped the $5K six-camera Omni rig and launched its GoPro VR channel in 2016. Fusion compresses that multi-camera rig into one small wearable shooting 5.2K — the first hint of GoPro's VR play reaching beyond professional buyers.

The timing matters because GoPro is cutting costs elsewhere: the company is trimming roughly a quarter of its workforce and shifting toward direct-to-consumer sales to return to profitability.
