The story behind the story

Instagram Direct now combines ephemeral messages with permanent messages in the same threads; Facebook says Direct now has 375M users, up from 300M in Nov. 2016

After successfully cloning Snapchat Stories, Instagram is looking to one-up its competitor in chat with a reimagining …

Context & Ripple Effects

This is the second act of Instagram's Snapchat squeeze: days before this report, Stories hit 200M daily active users, overtaking Snapchat's reported 161M DAUs just months after launch. Now Instagram is applying the same copy-and-integrate playbook to private messaging, folding disappearing messages into ordinary threads rather than keeping ephemerality a separate product.

The user number matters because it shows the inbox growing fast enough to be a competitive front on its own — growth that later justified spinning Direct into a standalone messaging app tested in six countries by December 2017, and eventually its quiet shutdown in 2019 once the in-app thread won.

First-order effects

  • Instagram Direct users can now send vanishing photos alongside permanent messages in one conversation, removing the need to leave Instagram for ephemeral chat.
  • Facebook gains a headline metric — 375M Direct users, up from 300M five months earlier — to counter Snapchat's core claim that disappearing communication is its territory.

Second-order effects

  • Snapchat loses the product distinction that defined it: with ephemerality now a mode inside Instagram's much larger network, Snapchat must compete on features Facebook can replicate within months, as the Stories race already showed.
  • Instagram's own roadmap splits — the same team that merged message types goes on to test Direct as a separate app, betting the inbox can anchor a standalone product against Messenger and WhatsApp.

Third-order effects

  • If the pattern holds, ephemeral messaging stops being a defensible category and becomes a table-stakes feature inside every major social app, shifting competition from who invented disappearing messages to who owns the largest graph they ride on.
  • The eventual failure of standalone Direct suggests the durable structure is platform-embedded chat: Facebook keeps experimenting with spin-offs but consolidates around the main Instagram thread.

The trend: Instagram is systematically absorbing Snapchat's differentiators — first Stories, then ephemeral chat — faster than Snapchat can convert them into lasting switching costs.
