Yelp acquires Wi-Fi marketing company Turnstyle Analytics for $20 million

Context & Ripple Effects

This is the second restaurant-tech tuck-in Yelp has announced in just over a month, following the $40M all-cash Nowait deal for waiting-list software in early March. Both deals sit on top of a business that reached profitability in early 2015 on the back of 72 million mobile users, giving Yelp a large consumer surface to point at merchant tools.

The $20M price tag is deliberately modest next to Yelp's earlier $134M bet on delivery network Eat24 — Turnstyle is a data-and-marketing layer, not an operations business, and it extends Yelp's reach from the dining room (Nowait) out to the sidewalk via Wi-Fi signals.

First-order effects

  • Turnstyle's Wi-Fi presence analytics become part of Yelp's merchant offering, letting restaurants measure who walks past or into their doors and tie those visits to Yelp's large mobile audience.
  • At $20M, the deal is a cheap capability add relative to the Nowait and Eat24 purchases — Yelp is buying data plumbing, not a new revenue line.

Second-order effects

  • Offline foot-traffic attribution strengthens Yelp's pitch for local ad budgets against platforms that can only measure clicks, complementing Nowait's front-of-house stack into a fuller restaurant toolkit.
  • Competing local-advertising and reservation players face pressure to match the closed loop of review-to-visit measurement or concede the attribution argument to Yelp.

Third-order effects

  • If the tuck-in cadence holds, Yelp consolidates restaurant operations — delivery (Eat24), waitlists (Nowait), Wi-Fi analytics (Turnstyle) — into a platform for local businesses rather than a pure ads company, though the later sale of Eat24 to GrubHub for $287.5M shows Yelp also willing to prune that stack when focus pays better.

The trend: Local review platforms are assembling full-stack merchant toolkits through small acquisitions, with Yelp iterating quickly enough to both add and shed capabilities within a single year.
