Streaming media software maker Plex opens Plex Cloud service to all Plex Pass subscribers
After a couple of stops and starts — and some concerns — media player software maker Plex is opening its online service known as Plex Cloud to all paying Plex users.
Context & Ripple Effects
Plex Cloud began as a narrow bet: a September 2016 partnership with Amazon that let only Plex Pass holders with an Amazon Drive account run a hardware-free media server in the cloud. The move followed Plex's December decision to make Plex Media Player free for all users while reserving Kodi support for subscribers — a pattern of widening the free tier while deepening what paid tiers unlock.
Opening Plex Cloud to every paying subscriber completes that arc: the company's most infrastructure-heavy feature is no longer gated behind a second storage account, just as Plex prepares to triple the price of its Lifetime Pass in July. The timing makes the current $249.99 lifetime tier materially more valuable before the increase lands.
First-order effects
- Every Plex Pass subscriber can now stream their library from Plex's cloud servers instead of maintaining always-on home hardware, removing the Amazon Drive prerequisite that defined the original launch cohort.
- Prospective buyers face a hard deadline economics play: the bundle of cloud hosting plus player features is richest right now, ahead of the July jump of the Lifetime tier from $249.99 to $749.99.
Second-order effects
- Amazon gains a passive consumption channel, since Plex Cloud runs on Drive storage — every new subscriber is incremental demand for Amazon's storage business rather than Plex's own data centers.
- Self-hosted alternatives in the same ecosystem, including Kodi setups that Plex itself supports for subscribers, now compete against a first-party hosted option that trades control for zero maintenance.
Third-order effects
- If the pattern holds, personal media serving follows the route Plex has already charted — from sold software to rented infrastructure — with the subscriber relationship, not the server box, becoming the product.
- A larger paying base running cloud libraries also gives Plex the audience scale to layer ad-supported content on top, the direction its later Watchup integration and free Web Shows beta point toward.
The trend: Personal media servers are shifting from locally owned hardware to cloud-hosted subscriptions, with storage partners absorbing the infrastructure burden.
