Media rendering firm Thinkbox announces that it has been acquired by Amazon, to join AWS

Amazon Web Services has acquired Thinkbox Software, which makes technology used by media and entertainment architects and engineers to manage render farms — large systems for processing computer-generated graphics and video.

Thinkbox is the latest in a string of specialist acquisitions AWS has used to build out media and compute workloads rather than develop them in-house. The pattern started with Amazon's buy of video processing firm Elemental Technologies, which became the foundation for new AWS media services.

Since then AWS has kept absorbing niche infrastructure vendors: the NICE acquisition bolstered its high-performance computing offering — the same category render farms fall into — and later buys like TSO Logic extended the toolkit for migrating customer workloads onto AWS. Thinkbox's render-farm management software gives Amazon a direct foothold in how studios and design firms process graphics and video.

  • AWS gains Thinkbox's render farm management technology and its media-and-entertainment customer base, which it can now steer toward running rendering jobs on EC2 instead of customers' own hardware.
