Twitter opens up Periscope Producer to all users; the service lets broadcasters incorporate live video from sources other than their mobile device

Periscope began as a defensive grab: Twitter confirmed its acquisition of Periscope at SXSW in March 2015 just as rival Meerkat's hype peaked, locking up phone-based livestreaming before a competitor could. Since then Twitter has steadily folded the technology inward — a go-live broadcast button for all users in its iOS and Android apps, then native broadcasts inside Twitter itself while Periscope continued standalone.

The non-mobile thread has been building too: an early GoPro integration brought action-camera streams to Periscope, and weeks after this story Twitter followed with a Periscope Producer API in private beta for publishers. Opening Producer to all users is the moment that professional-source streaming stops being a gated pilot and becomes a default capability.
