Chrome for Android adds WebVR support for the Daydream headset

Google has been walking WebVR toward production for months: last summer it shipped WebVR and VR Shell only to Chrome's beta and dev builds on Android, an explicit experiment rather than a user-facing feature. This move promotes that experiment into stable Chrome for Android with Daydream as the target headset.

The timing matters because Google was simultaneously building the surrounding ecosystem — weeks later it launched a dedicated WebVR content hub and extended support to Cardboard, and by mid-2018 it followed through with a full Chrome browser built for the Daydream platform. Stable-channel WebVR was the hinge between those two moments.

  • Daydream owners can now reach VR-enabled websites directly from the stable Chrome they already use, no sideloading or developer flags required.
