This alliance is the second standards body Cisco has joined in under a year: the company was already a founding member of the Open Connectivity Foundation with Microsoft, Qualcomm, Intel, and Samsung, which set out to make IoT devices interoperate. The new group attacks a different layer — not whether devices talk to each other, but whether they can prove what they are, using a distributed ledger as the trust mechanism.

It also lands mid-arc on two fronts. Bosch had just opened its own IoT cloud service to outside customers, giving it a platform this protocol could secure, and within months IBM would show the enterprise appetite for ledger-based trust with its blockchain collaboration with Walmart, Unilever, and Nestlé on food supply chains.

  • Rival consortia face pressure to answer: the Open Connectivity Foundation's interoperability agenda now has a parallel security track run by an overlapping but distinct membership, raising the odds of duplicated or conflicting specifications.
  • Blockchain startups in the alliance get industrial-scale validation beyond financial pilots, strengthening the case enterprises like IBM's food partners were already testing for ledgers outside finance.
