Facebook is testing ephemeral Stories which sit at the top of News Feed in its main app in Ireland, mimicking Snapchat and Instagram

After successfully copying Snapchat with Instagram Stories, Facebook is at it again in its big blue app.  —  The same interface, which Facebook …

Context & Ripple Effects

This Ireland test is the third step in a deliberate sequence: after trying the format as "Messenger Day" in Poland in October 2016, Facebook began testing Snapchat-style camera effects and private ephemeral sharing in the main app, also in Ireland. The difference here is placement — Stories sitting directly on top of the News Feed puts the clone inside Facebook's highest-traffic surface rather than a side app.

The stakes come from the template's provenance: Instagram Stories had already shown Facebook's copy could work, and coverage through early 2017 framed these tests as an explicit effort to curb Snapchat's growth. Two months later the test graduated into a full rollout of Stories and Direct atop the News Feed, with Recode counting it as the fourth Snapchat imitation across Facebook's app family.

First-order effects

  • Facebook users in Ireland get the Stories tray above their News Feed, making the main app's opening screen structurally identical to Snapchat's and Instagram's.
  • Snapchat's core format stops being a differentiator: by January 2017 the ephemeral story exists in Instagram, Messenger, and now the flagship Facebook app itself.

Second-order effects

  • Snapchat is forced to compete on features and audience rather than format ownership, since the world's largest social network can replicate each product move at News Feed scale.
  • Users and creators gain a single ephemeral grammar across every Facebook-owned app, reducing the cost of ignoring Snapchat entirely.

Third-order effects

  • If the pattern holds — clone, test in a small market, roll out app-wide — competition on Facebook's platforms shifts from who invents a format to who has the distribution to normalize it fastest, with all four apps converging on the same camera-first interface.

The trend: Facebook is systematically porting Snapchat's ephemeral format into every app it owns, using distribution scale rather than invention to neutralize a rival's product edge.
