Two years ago Samsung was the customer walking away — sources had it dropping the Snapdragon 810 for its own Exynos silicon after the 810 overheated its way out of a flagship. The recovery ran through Samsung itself: Qualcomm moved production to Samsung's foundries instead of TSMC, struck a deal for Samsung to manufacture the Snapdragon 820, and phone makers broadly embraced the 820 for 2016 flagships.

Now the leverage runs the other way. Because Samsung fabs Qualcomm's leading-edge chips, it sits first in line for Snapdragon 835 allocation — and per this report it is consuming enough of that supply that LG and HTC must launch 2017 flagships on the year-old Snapdragon 821.

  • LG and HTC's next flagships launch a full chipset generation behind the Galaxy S8, handing Samsung a spec-sheet advantage over the two Android rivals closest to it in positioning.
