Synaptics unveils new multi-factor authentication system that can combine fingerprint and facial recognition for smartphones, tablets, and laptops

Synaptics has been building toward this for a year: its optical fingerprint sensors that work under glass debuted in December 2016 as a feature expected in next-generation smartphones, and by late 2017 the company had an in-display fingerprint sensor in mass production with a top five OEM. The new multi-factor system extends that sensor line from single-modality to combining fingerprint and facial recognition across phones, tablets, and laptops.

The move lands in a market where rivals are also stacking modalities: Qualcomm licensed BASF skin-liveness detection technology that could compete with face-based systems, and Intel later shipped RealSense ID as an on-device facial authentication tool for locks, ATMs, and kiosks.
