AT&T's 2016 Call Protect launch is the opening move in a shift that took three years to complete: what began as an opt-in service limited to postpaid iOS and Android devices became, by mid-2019, a free robocall-blocking default for new customers, with existing customers to follow. In between, AT&T and T-Mobile started rolling out cross-network call authentication against spoofed robocalls, and Verizon switched on default spam filtering after an FCC vote cleared carriers to do so.
