This is the second time in seven months Apple has yanked an update over bricking complaints: in May it pulled iOS 9.3.2 for the 9.7-inch iPad Pro after tablets died mid-update, and now watchOS 3.1.1 is off the servers for doing the same to some Series 2 Watches.

The playbook is established enough that the shape of what comes next is known from later history — when watchOS 5.1 bricked Watches in 2018, Apple followed within a week with a corrected 5.1.1 build. The open question for Series 2 owners is longer-term: these are the same devices that were later cut off entirely from watchOS 7.
