Delivery Hero buys Foodpanda in sought after food delivery market

Berlin-based online food takeaway service Delivery Hero, one of Europe's biggest start-ups, will acquire competitor Foodpanda, a sign of further consolidation to fend off new competition in Europe's sought after food-delivery business.

Context & Ripple Effects

Delivery Hero has been buying its way to scale since it paid a record $589M for Turkey's Yemeksepeti in 2015 (its biggest deal at the time); absorbing Foodpanda removes one of the few remaining independent competitors in Europe's subsidy-heavy takeaway wars. The logic of the deal only becomes clear in hindsight: within two years Delivery Hero announced a $500M+ German IPO on the back of rapid revenue growth, then reversed course at home entirely, selling Lieferheld, Pizza.de and foodora to Takeaway.com for €930M in 2018.

What makes this acquisition notable is that Foodpanda outlived the buyer's own home-market brands — by 2024 Delivery Hero was folding Foodora and Yemeksepeti into Foodpanda as its pan-regional vehicle, making the 2016 purchase the seed of its current Asia-and-Middle-East-centered structure.

First-order effects

  • Europe's food-delivery market loses an independent player: Foodpanda's operations come under Delivery Hero, easing the discounting pressure that defined the segment for diners and restaurants alike.

Second-order effects

  • Rivals respond in kind rather than fight alone — Takeaway.com ends up buying Delivery Hero's own German business two years later, and Delivery Hero keeps shopping, adding Glovo's eight-country Latin American footprint in 2020.

Third-order effects

  • The pattern points to food delivery consolidating around a handful of global operators that treat countries as portfolio assets to be bought, merged and exited — Delivery Hero now runs that playbook across more than 70 countries while shedding units and concentrating on Asia and the Middle East under investor pressure.

The trend: Food delivery is consolidating from dozens of subsidized local champions into a few scaled global platforms that acquire rivals at home and trade entire geographies to shape their portfolios.
