Chinese AI startup Z.ai releases GLM-4.7, an open-weight model that Z.ai says delivers significant improvements in coding performance compared to GLM-4.6

Context & Ripple Effects

GLM-4.7 extends Z.ai’s rapid open-weights release cadence: the company had positioned GLM-4.6 as a long-context coding and reasoning model only months earlier. Making the new model the default in its GLM Coding Plan turns a claimed model improvement into an immediate product-level upgrade for existing users.

The release also sits within a broader progression toward agentic coding and longer-horizon work, later reflected in Z.ai’s GLM-5.2 update for agentic coding and long-horizon tasks. The relevant question is therefore not benchmark positioning alone, but whether open-weight releases can keep improving the coding workflow customers actually use.
