Things are playing out just as I have been forecasting for months. Apple is undergoing a major executive transformation. COO, CFO, head of AI, head of design and others gone just this year.

Stephen Lemay is listed on Apple patents going all the way back to 2003.  He's on some of the most important ones in Apple history alongside some of the biggest names.  Have a feeling all is in very good, very safe hands.  I mean just look at some of these, there are countless fr…

I've asked this question before and I will ask it again: When does the Apple board intervene?  The narrative no one believes anymore is “that person wasn't any good or we have an even better replacement.”  My guess is BoD won't do a thing as long as the stock is this high.  If it…

This ain't a “coup”. It's a healthy reboot for Apple Design.

Apple spent a good chunk of the past two years trying to position Alan as their face of design. For good reason! But this move shatters that. For better or worse, there needs to be a “face” associated with Apple design not a bunch of lower level executives who we rarely ever see

Dye has most recently overseen the interface of iOS 26 and Liquid Glass, the Vision Pro's interface and spatial computing interactions, the Dynamic Island, iPhone X, and watchOS.

Apple is naming Stephen Lemay, a longtime company designer, as Dye's replacement. This marks yet another monumental departure from Apple amid a larger shake-up of its executive ranks.

Big loss for Apple. I met Alan Dye at the iPhone 17 launch and spoke to him for quite a bit, such a genuinely nice guy. [image]

Good riddance.  I'm seriously considering skipping macOS 26.  —  I installed macOS 26 the other day on a new MacBook Air (M4) and within 30 min I was re-installing macOS 15.7.  —  I just can't imagine using macOS 26 for any length of time.  The UX is really that bad.  —  www.bloo…

I'm officially excited.  Lamay has the background you want for someone in this role.  And having been there since 1999, he was around for the glory days of the Mac UI.  No we're not going back to Snow Leopard, but the Mac could benefit from a certain... perspective... that has be…

@daringfireball I think the fact that Dye considered Meta a good fit gives some insight into why everything he's influenced at Apple feels so profoundly un-Apple-like.

Apple doesn't just fire top executives. The company completely missed on generative AI, Siri's overhaul was delayed by 1.5 years and the company is facing an AI crisis — And its AI chief got a year of garden leave on the way out and a “retirement” goodbye with gratitude.

Alan Dye quotes Steve Jobs when announcing his departure on Instagram [screenshot: “I think if you do something and it turns out pretty good, then you should go do something else wonderful, not dwell on it for too long.  Just figure out what's next.”  Steve Jobs]

This is a guy Apple would have never gotten rid of no matter what anyone on here thinks about Liquid Glass.
  • @markgurman Mark Gurman on x
The many people happy about Alan Dye leaving Apple are missing the bigger point: he was Apple's head of design and he left to run design at maybe Apple's primary competitor. *That* is the enormous development. Apple is losing top people like it hasn't in 30 years.
