Samsung unveils the Galaxy Z TriFold, with a 6.5" outer screen, a 10" inner screen, a Snapdragon 8 Elite for Galaxy SoC, and a 3.9mm body at its thinnest point

It's really called the TriFold and it's really coming to the US. … It'll launch first in Korea on December 12th, with a US launch planned for the first quarter of 2026.

The Verge Allison Johnson

Context & Ripple Effects

Samsung’s foldable line had been moving toward larger screens and thinner hardware, including the 8-inch Galaxy Z Fold7 with a 6.5-inch cover display. The TriFold extends that design direction from a book-style foldable to a device that opens into a 10-inch display.

The announcement also confirms specifications that had surfaced in prelaunch reporting on Samsung’s trifold, turning a rumored category experiment into a planned Korea-first product rollout with a US launch to follow.

First-order effects

  • Samsung adds a three-panel foldable to its premium mobile lineup, pairing a phone-sized outer display with a tablet-sized inner workspace.
  • Korean buyers get first access in December, while US buyers must wait for the planned first-quarter 2026 launch; Qualcomm’s Galaxy-tuned Snapdragon 8 Elite is the named processor platform.

Second-order effects

  • Samsung’s existing Fold models become a clearer choice between a more conventional large-screen foldable and a larger, more complex tri-fold form factor.
  • The 3.9mm thinnest-point design and 10-inch panel raise the bar competitors and display-component suppliers will be judged against for multi-fold hardware.

Third-order effects

  • If Samsung sustains this product line, premium foldables could segment into distinct book-style and tablet-expanding tiers rather than remaining a single category.
  • The rollout is a test of whether increasingly thin multi-fold designs can move beyond demonstration products into a repeatable global flagship format; the later $2,899 US pricing disclosure underscores the premium-market constraint.

The trend: The TriFold is one data point in the push to make foldables span more screen sizes and use cases while reducing the physical compromises of multi-panel devices.

the biggest constraint with the book-style form-factor of the Fold7 and every previous fold has always been the square aspect ratio of the inner-screen, especially for media consumption. the trifold will almost certainly fix that 🤌 [image]
