OpenAI says it paused Sora's ability to generate videos resembling MLK Jr. at the request of his estate, after some users created “disrespectful depictions”

OpenAI announced Thursday it paused the ability for users to generate videos resembling the late civil rights activist …

TechCrunch Maxwell Zeff

Context & Ripple Effects

Sora’s rollout has repeatedly exposed tensions between creative access and control: its early-access program was suspended after artists protested their treatment as promotional cover for the product, a dispute captured in the 2024 artist-access protest.

This restriction follows Sora’s earlier move to let people limit where AI versions of themselves appear, including political videos, via context-specific self-likeness controls. The MLK Jr. case extends that governance question from living users to prominent historical figures and their estates.

First-order effects

  • Sora users lose the ability to generate videos resembling MLK Jr., while OpenAI must enforce a named-likeness restriction in its video-generation workflow.
  • The MLK Jr. estate receives the requested immediate safeguard against the reported misuse, rather than relying solely on post-publication responses.

Second-order effects

  • The move creates pressure for OpenAI to define how similar requests from estates and rights holders are evaluated, so comparable restrictions do not appear arbitrary.
  • Other AI-video providers face a clearer reputational benchmark: controls limited to user self-management may not address harms involving deceased public figures and cultural icons.

Third-order effects

  • If rights-holder interventions become routine, synthetic-video products may evolve from broad generation tools toward policy-driven control layers that govern identities, contexts, and exceptions.
  • That would make likeness governance a recurring product and legal-operational function, though the corpus does not establish whether a consistent industry-wide standard will emerge.

The trend: Generative-video platforms are moving from general-purpose creation toward increasingly granular governance of who may be depicted and in what contexts.

Statement from OpenAI and King Estate, Inc.

King estate is uniquely litigious (eg they still collect royalties on the I Have A Dream speech) but what are we doing here? Public figures and their estates control likeness until the heat death of the universe?
  • @kevinroose Kevin Roose on x
two weeks from “everyone loves the fun new social network” to “users generated disrespectful depictions of Dr. King's image” has to be some kind of speed record

  • @paulfabretti Paul Fabretti on x
This doesn't surprise me. It certainly felt like in the first three days or so that everything was fair game until the lawyers found out. By the end of the week, content infringement was so common it was its own content meme.
  • @larakate Lara Cohen on x
Are they going to write an apology for every public figure or normal person who has their likeness used without their consent with SORA? I hope they like writing apologies. Also, maybe don't launch it if you haven't figured out what “ultimately controlling your likeness” means.
  • @ednewtonrex Ed Newton-Rex on x
This is a non-apology. People should not have to opt out of being depicted in OpenAI's deepfake app. 'Exploit people's likenesses and copyrights until they complain' is a terrible position for a deepfake app to take.
  • @_alexhirsch Alex Hirsch on x
@OpenAINewsroom So your business model is to dig up celebrities corpses and let users Weekend-At-Bernies their bodies around until their families beg you to stop? What the fuck happened to curing cancer?

AI video generation will be the biggest tool of political propoganda in 2 years. A part of me just shivers from the misuse of technology.

This is just one of 100s of 1000s of these situations that will arise.
  • @sentdex Harrison Kinsley on x
This sets a curious precedent that I don't think will survive very long + increases the fervor behind a specific meme template that would have likely otherwise faded out in a few days.

Thanks Open AI, I would like to formally request that you remove any and all data with my likeness in it. I am saying this publicly, this makes me a public figure and by your precedent means I have the right to request this. Anyone else?

@OpenAINewsroom if OpenAI believes public figures and families should have control over their likeness then you should ask for consent before you include them in your dataset you bozos

I'm shocked that anyone would use your shitty copyright theft machine for bad things...TRULY SHOCKED
  • @backwardsfeet Fr. Paul on x
You shouldn't have to be a famous person to opt out of having your likeness used in image generation models. Non-consensual use of your information in training data is theft.

seems like they not only neutered sora, they did it to chatgpt too. this all seems like a cycle though, it happened with ghibli as well. [image]

what @BerniceKing did sets an important precedent. protecting legacy and likeness should be the baseline, not the exception. regulation is a must.

I agree this had gotten to a place of disrespect. It's part of why Sora's feed has been so off-putting. (That said, the feed still sucks and needs a lot of work.)

I think there is a good argument that this policy should apply to non-public figures as well to avoid a scenario of “regressive defamation” where those who did not choose public scrutiny are less able to protect themselves.

altman is a chicken. When his company obviously abuses images of some Japanese manga studio, he doesn't see an issue. But when King, Inc. sends a lawyer, he suddenly appoligizes and sets a filter. Hmm, what's different, sam?

If only OpenAI could have foreseen the entirely predictable hazards of irresponsibly releasing this tech.  I guess the estate of every dead person will have to individually request a special dispensation to no longer have disgusting videos made by OpenAI's tools.
