DGX Spark began as Project Digits, positioned around running models up to 200 billion parameters locally, before Nvidia renamed it and opened reservations in March. The product reached sale through Nvidia and retailers this week as a $3,999 developer mini PC with DGX OS after its retail launch was announced.

The hands-on results test the practical compromise behind that positioning: a compact system can expose unusually large unified memory, but its bandwidth and observed model throughput do not match every higher-end alternative. That makes the surrounding Nvidia software environment, rather than industrial design, central to its differentiation.

First-order effects

  • Developers whose local workloads are constrained by model memory capacity gain a small-form-factor option with 128GB of unified memory and an advertised path to 200B-parameter models.
  • Buyers must weigh that capacity against lower reported bandwidth and slower reported GPT OSS 120B throughput than an M3 Max; DGX Spark is not a universal raw-performance replacement.

Second-order effects

  • Nvidia’s software stack becomes a more important purchase criterion: early recipients and reviewers can validate tooling and workflows that make the hardware’s performance trade-off more acceptable.
  • Competing local-AI systems will be compared less on a single compute figure and more on the combination of memory capacity, bandwidth, model compatibility, and developer software.

Third-order effects

  • The category could segment into specialized local AI machines: memory-oriented systems for fitting larger models and throughput-oriented systems for faster inference, rather than one general-purpose “AI PC” standard.
  • If Nvidia’s ecosystem converts early developer use into repeatable workflows, the company can extend its platform position from data-center DGX systems into smaller developer deployments; the reviews show that hardware performance alone will not determine that outcome.
