Apple says Apple TV+ streaming service is being renamed as Apple TV, with “a vibrant new identity”
Buried in its announcement about “F1: The Movie” making its streaming debut on December 12, Apple has also announced that Apple TV+ is being rebranded as simply Apple TV.
Context & Ripple Effects
Apple introduced its original-content subscription as Apple TV+ in 2019, alongside an existing Apple TV device and app. The new name removes the plus sign but also makes the subscription share the same label as the wider TV product family.
That follows Apple’s 2023 TV app redesign, which unified viewing navigation and redirected iTunes TV and movie searches into Apple TV. The rebrand extends that consolidation from product design into naming.
First-order effects
- Apple’s streaming subscription is now marketed as Apple TV, giving its service, app, and hardware ecosystem a more unified public identity.
- Existing Apple TV+ references across Apple’s consumer-facing materials will need to transition to the new name, while users must distinguish the subscription from the app and device.
Second-order effects
- A single Apple TV label can make Apple’s service easier to position within its own TV interface, but creates a sharper need for clear subscription messaging at the point of purchase.
- Studios and distribution partners referring to Apple’s originals or streaming destination will need to update terminology, reinforcing Apple TV as the common consumer-facing destination.
Third-order effects
- The move indicates that Apple is treating TV less as a standalone streaming add-on and more as a unified media surface spanning content, software, and devices.
- If Apple continues consolidating its media labels around destination apps, platform ownership and interface placement—not just a distinct subscription brand—could become more central to service discovery.
The trend: Streaming services are increasingly being folded into broader platform brands and viewing hubs rather than marketed as isolated subscription products.
