We're fighting for a national AI strategy that gives Little Tech a fair shot and keeps the U.S. in the lead.  CA's AI bill (SB 53) includes some thoughtful provisions that account for the distinct needs of startups.  But it misses an important mark by regulating how the technolog…

Congrats to all who made SB 53 happen! Dunno how big, small, etc., but it is *a* step forward, and one I hope Congress builds on. Plus it had the added benefit of helping clarify who is interested in well-designed policies vs. talking about the need for well-designed policies.

Well, I'm bummed California beat us to the punch, but inspired because this proves commonsense AI safeguards are possible. @AlexBores and I introduced the RAISE Act here in New York to ensure advanced AI makes life better, not put it at risk. It's time to sign it into law.

Thank you to the authors of the California Report on Frontier AI Policy! Their important work made SB 53 possible. [image]

SB 53 doubles down on California's role as global AI innovation leader & ensures we also lead globally on AI safety. It's an exciting step for responsible scaling of AI innovation. I'm grateful to the Governor & our coalition, including @EncodeAction, @ESP_Action & Secure AI.
  • @cagovernor Governor Gavin Newsom on x
Today, I'm signing legislation to install common-sense guardrails ensuring the safety and further development of cutting-edge AI systems. California is proving that it's possible to both protect people and ensure our state's growing industries continue to shape the future.

Congratulations to @Scott_Wiener, @GavinNewsom, and all of California for passing SB53, which will for the first time in the US require safety standards for advanced AI research. 🧵

DIG DEEPER: #SB53 establishes new requirements for frontier AI developers creating stronger: ✅ Transparency: Requires large frontier developers to publicly publish a framework on its website describing how the company has incorporated national standards, international standards, …

Gov. Newsom signs #SB53, which means #AI developers will have to disclose their safety policies among other protections against catastrophic risks https://news.bloomberglaw.com/ ...

While we believe that frontier AI safety is best addressed at the federal level instead of a patchwork of state regulations, powerful AI advancements won't wait for consensus in Washington. SB53 should serve as a powerful example for other states and Congress.

We applaud @CAgovernor for signing @Scott_Wiener's SB 53, establishing transparency requirements for frontier AI companies that will help us all have better data about these systems and the companies building them. Anthropic is proud to have supported this bill.

Gov. Newsom just signed CA Sen Wiener's AI transparency bill, SB 53, requiring AI companies w/ over $500m in rev to disclose safety protocols + creating protections for AI whistleblowers. Much less industry pushback on this than Wiener's previous AI liability bill, SB 1047
  • @scott_r_singer Scott Singer on x
Today, CA Gov. Gavin Newsom signed SB-53 into law—the first in the U.S. explicitly focused on frontier AI policy. The bill draws directly on the policy principles we outline in the CA Report on Frontier AI Policy, for which I served as lead writer alongside @RishiBommasani.

CTA is disappointed to see California rush into AI legislation. SB 53 is not the right approach. The U.S. needs a national framework to lead in AI, not a state patchwork. https://cta.tech/...

JUST IN: @CAGovernor Gavin Newsom signed #SB53, legislation further establishing California as a world leader in safe, secure, and trustworthy artificial intelligence — creating a new law that helps the state both boost innovation and protect public safety.

So much for NY being first state to regulate Frontier AI models ... Newsom signed a measure in California. New York bill has yet to be sent to Hochul https://www.gov.ca.gov/...

BREAKING: Governor @GavinNewsom just signed our groundbreaking AI bill, SB 53, to promote AI innovation (creating a public cloud called CalCompute), require transparency around AI lab safety practices & protect whistleblowers at AI labs who report risk of catastrophic harm. 🧵

California is leading the way on regulating tech & AI, passing the most significant AI law in the country.  We know tech is too big to regulate itself, and this is a critical step towards more responsible innovation to protect digital rights & expression: www.gov.ca.gov/2025/09/2…
