Meta upgrades Horizon Worlds with Meta Horizon Studio, which lets creators use AI prompts to make VR worlds, powered by its “built from scratch” Horizon Engine

The Horizon Engine powers ‘better graphics’ for Meta's Horizon Worlds social platform.

The Verge Jay Peters

Context & Ripple Effects

Horizon Worlds had already been repositioned beyond a headset-only experience through its expansion to web and mobile, while Meta also backed its supply side with a $50 million creator fund. Horizon Studio adds a creation tool to that broader distribution-and-creator strategy.

The release also follows Meta’s plan to bring AssetGen 2.0 to Horizon creators, connecting generative 3D assets with a tool for assembling worlds. Later coverage of a separation between Quest and Worlds underscores how central the platform, rather than VR hardware alone, became to Meta’s Worlds strategy.

First-order effects

  • Horizon creators can use prompts in Meta Horizon Studio to make VR worlds, with the Horizon Engine supplying the graphics foundation described in the report.
  • Meta gains a more integrated creation layer for Horizon Worlds, joining its engine and generative-asset efforts around the same platform.

Second-order effects

  • The practical bottleneck for Horizon Worlds shifts toward the quality, distinctiveness, and retention value of AI-made worlds rather than solely the technical ability to build them.
  • Creator incentives such as Meta’s fund become more consequential: easier production can expand the pool of potential creators, while increasing the need to surface worthwhile experiences.

Third-order effects

  • If Meta continues pairing AI creation tools with broader device access, Worlds could evolve from a VR-led destination into a platform competing on the pace and breadth of user-created content.
  • The approach points to a more vertically integrated social-world stack—engine, asset generation, creation interface, and distribution—though its impact depends on whether creators and audiences adopt the resulting worlds.

The trend: Generative AI is moving from producing individual 3D assets to becoming the interface through which creators construct and publish interactive worlds.

Meta scrapping Unity to build their own game engine (Horizon Engine) is really interesting. I doubt it has as much to do with the Unity tax and more so to allow them to vertically integrate with all their own layers of ~SOTA AI starting with gaussian splatting

Meta announces the new Meta Horizon Engine > Foundational infrastructure for the “meta verse” > Teases one day coming to the “glasses” > new landscapes/homes inside of your VR... Looks like Zuck isn't giving up on the meta verse

There's a new Meta Horizon Engine to power much more realistic 3D worlds for the Metaverse. It looks so much better and is 4x faster to render. The Meta Horizon Studio will use Agentic AI to help make 3D worlds easier and faster to create. #metaconnect2025 [image]

I got a decent bit right here, so that's nice. “HSR” = Meta Horizon Engine

The idea of Horizon Studio is making it easy for developers to build VR apps today and eventually to glasses and social media. My take: Bad news for $U

. @meta is adding Horizon TV to your Quest VR headset with Disney+, Universal, and more, with @Dolby Atmos and Vision.  That is a key use case for the Apple Vision Pro at 7x the price, so this makes sense.  (And it's almost certainly a rev share for Meta) #MetaConnect2025

literally in the metaverse, watching a show about the future of the metaverse and james cameron just blew the lid off the sports streaming thing oops #metaconnect [image]

Launching Horizon TV.  This is similar to what Apple showed when they launched Vision Pro.  Meta has Disney and Universal Studios already onboard.  My take: I agree with Zuck that immersive TV eventually, as in 5 years, be thing.  This totally different than 3D displays from 12 y…

Dolby Vision in Horizon TV probably means that we can expect HDR headsets soon, instead of in a few years. 🤔 #MetaConnect #MetaQuest

Meta has launched Horizon TV, which is a new entertainment hub with new partners Disney Plus and Universal and Horror Movie studios Blume House. It also supports Dolby Atmos and soon Dolby Vision for immersive and realistic sound and vision. #Metaconnect2025 [image]

Introducing: Hyperscape Capture 📷 Last year we showed the world's highest quality Gaussian Splatting, and the first time GS was viewable in VR. Now, capture your own Hyperscapes, directly from your Quest headset in only 5 minutes of walking around. https://www.meta.com/... [video…

fyi if you're not seeing this in the Store, you may have to install the “Meta Horizon Hyperscape (Preview)” app first (also it's US only). After doing that this showed up as “Purchased” in the mobile app and I could download it from my Library in-headset.

I already have a nice TV and don't see the point of strapping a heavy set of goggles to my face so I can watch a pretend and worse TV. www.theverge.com/news/780492/ ...
