This survey adds a US college-student view to evidence that AI use is becoming routine in education. A prior UK undergraduate survey found widespread AI-assisted study, putting the reported use of GenAI for ideation in a broader campus-workflow context.

The significance is not simply adoption: a portion of respondents say the technology has changed how they assess college’s value. That extends an education debate that began with educators testing GenAI’s place in the classroom beyond cheating concerns and toward the perceived return on higher education.

  • For surveyed students, GenAI is already an ideation tool: 55% report using it to brainstorm, making it part of the work that precedes drafting and assignment completion.
