TikTok suspends its live feature for the “next few days” in Indonesia, citing “increasing violence in protests” over lawmakers' pay

ByteDance's TikTok has suspended its live feature for the “next few days” in Indonesia following protests in the country, its spokesperson said in a statement on Saturday.

Context & Ripple Effects

Indonesia has already been a proving ground for the limits of TikTok's operating model: the government moved to restrict direct social-commerce transactions, and TikTok subsequently stopped facilitating TikTok Shop transactions to comply. That history makes a temporary live-streaming pause more than a routine safety measure; it occurs in a market where platform features have repeatedly drawn direct policy scrutiny.

The episode also foreshadowed a sharper compliance dispute: Indonesia later suspended TikTok's local operating license over incomplete livestream activity information before restoring it after the company supplied requested data. The sequence ties content moderation during unrest to the platform's ability to maintain local regulatory standing.

First-order effects

  • Indonesian TikTok users, creators and businesses temporarily lose access to live broadcasting while the company limits a feature it says is implicated by escalating protest violence.
  • TikTok must manage the shutdown as both a safety intervention and a local-government compliance issue, with its livestream operations placed under closer scrutiny.

Second-order effects

  • The suspension raises the stakes for TikTok to retain and produce records of livestream activity for authorities, as reflected in the later license restoration after requested activity data was provided.
  • Creators and merchants that use live video for audience engagement must shift activity to other TikTok formats or rival channels during the interruption, reducing the value of live features in a sensitive period.

Third-order effects

  • Indonesia's successive interventions suggest that feature-level restrictions can become a recurring tool for governing large platforms, rather than regulation being limited to a platform-wide ban or approval.
  • If this pattern persists, platforms operating in politically sensitive markets will need to design live and commerce products around faster local shutdowns, data-response obligations and uneven feature availability.

The trend: This is one data point in the shift from broad social-platform regulation toward government oversight of specific high-risk features such as livestreaming and in-app commerce.

This is troubling. TikTok has “voluntarily” suspended its Live feature in Indonesia for the next few days amid the protests. Not hard to see this as an attempt to suppress information about the protests after media regulator also tried to ban mainstream outlets from reporting.

If there are suddenly no more translations / live reports from me, blame Indonesia's government (They just revoked TikTok live feature, won't be surprising if they escalate and block access to social media like Twt and Discord in future)

just got notified that TikTok already shut down all access to do livestream in Indonesia. hm, wondering, is this because the government told them to, or is it TikTok's own initiative? [video]

TikTok Live is banned. Instagram Live is banned. All live streaming platforms are currently banned by the Indonesia government, only X can still be used right now. To all my Indonesian friends, please stay safe!! I know we're stronger than this!! Don't fall for provocations,

Things are about to escalate in Indonesia. Prabowo has ordered police and military chiefs to take ‘firm measures,’ even as hundreds of protestors have been injured. TikTok Live has been suspended. It had been key to expose police brutality as mainstream media fail the people.

civil unrest in indonesia have escalated as of the night of aug 30th. power outage in some areas in combination with nationwide ban on tiktok live is a massive, massive red flag for civilian safety 🚨🚨 there have been reports of law enforcement firing upon civilians.

Meanwhile, TikTok announced it has temporarily suspended its live feature in Indonesia for “a few days” because of the violent protests. Indonesia has one of the world's biggest audiences on the social media platform, with more than 100 million users. https://www.dw.com/...

Interesting.  TikTok, on Saturday it had suspended its live feature in Indonesia for a few days.  Indonesian Govt  —  summoned representatives of social media platforms, and told them to boost content moderation because disinformation had spread online.

Tiktok has just issued a ban on tiktok live in Indonesia region after today's raid on a certain tone-deaf parliament member being broadcasted live.  (Said dude literally mocked and said that protesters were IDIOT and should just go home, before fleeing to Singapore).  [image]
