A profile of UCB CS professor Ion Stoica, a billionaire who has helped launch four startups out of his privately-funded research lab, including Databricks

championed by colleagues like @trevordarrell, @pabbeel, @istoica05, and othersβ€”is leading the nation, unleashing the creativity of top students and research labs through industry-sponsored open-source research and valuable startups. In Hemant Mohapatra / @mohapatrahemant : He won't remember but in 2017 I met @istoica05 for a dinner in SF along w/ Peter Levine. Peter had to leave for 15mins for a call &, during that time, Ion asked me so many Qs about my childhood & my work, that I forgot who really was the celebrity at that table. A total mensch. Robert Nishihara / @robertnishihara : I don't think it's very widely known how big of a role @istoica05 and the research community at UC Berkeley have played in shaping technology through research and open source. For just a few recent examples of foundational open source technologies, Ion and his students created LinkedIn: Rich Lyons : Berkeley faculty pushing the frontiers of AI. https://lnkd.in/... Ashu Garg : Ion Stoica is a remarkable researcher, technologist and entrepreneur.Β  In addition to co-founding Conviva, Databricks and Anyscale … Martina Di Licosa : Back in April, when I was still a student at Columbia University - Graduate School of Journalism, I cold-emailed Professor Ion Stoica to ask if he would help me with a data visualization project. … Hui Zhang : From #CMU/#Berkeley labs to billion-dollar boardrooms.Β  β€”Β  I've had the privilege of working with Ion Stoica for 30 years … Luisa Kroll : I love this story by Martina Di Licosa!Β  Ion Stoica cofounded $62 billion Databricks out of his Berkeley Computer Lab and was CEO for three years … Rich Adao : Fun Fact: Anyscale was founded by Michael Jordan πŸ˜‰Β  β€”Β  Ion Stoica = Low-ego + high-impact.Β  It's a privilege to know and work with Ion. … Tuan Vu : Big fan of how Professor Ion Stoica bridges research and entrepreneurshipβ€”Spark/ Databricks, Ray/Anyscale, and now LMArenaβ€”while mentoring students at UC Berkeley and championing open source.

From my limited interactions with @istoica05, I see him as one of the best computer scientists of our times. He is a true intellect who not only knows integrating academic research with commercial systems, but also how to build the entire ecosystem of people and technological

@istoica05 and his research colleagues at UC Berkeley have played a pivotal role in shaping both distributed systems and AI ecosystem through research, open source projects and entrepreneurship! Ion and his students created Apache Spark, Ray, vLLM, and SGLang, amongst others.
