OpenAI removes a ChatGPT feature that let users make their conversations discoverable by Google and other search engines, calling it a “short-lived experiment”

Update 7/31/25 4:10pm PT: Hours after this article was published, OpenAI said it removed the feature from ChatGPT …

TechCrunch Amanda Silberling

Context & Ripple Effects

OpenAI has been widening ChatGPT’s public-facing reach, including opening ChatGPT search to people without accounts. The now-withdrawn sharing experiment put user conversations closer to the open-web discovery model associated with Google.

The reversal also sits against a prior ChatGPT privacy incident in which a bug exposed some users’ chat-history titles, reinforcing why controls around conversation visibility are consequential.

First-order effects

  • Users can no longer opt to make ChatGPT conversations discoverable through Google and other search engines; OpenAI has ended the experiment rather than iterating on it publicly.
  • Search engines lose a potential source of user-published ChatGPT pages, while OpenAI avoids continuing to expose a product path where private-looking conversations could become publicly findable.

Second-order effects

  • The removal limits a possible acquisition loop in which indexed ChatGPT pages could send search traffic back to ChatGPT, even as OpenAI continues to expand access to its own search experience.
  • It raises the bar for any AI product that wants users to publish or index generated interactions: consent, visibility defaults, and the distinction between sharing and search indexing become product-critical.

Third-order effects

  • As AI assistants become search surfaces as well as private workspaces, platforms are likely to separate public publishing features more clearly from ordinary chat histories rather than treating indexing as a lightweight sharing option.
  • The episode points to frontier-model access governance becoming a product-design issue: broader distribution can increase utility, but it also makes privacy failures and ambiguous user expectations more costly.

The trend: AI assistants are converging with web publishing and search, forcing providers to balance discoverability-driven growth against stricter controls over user-generated conversational data.

OpenAI killed a ChatGPT feature that made some sensitive conversations publicly searchable.  —  If you knew where to look, anyone on the internet could access public ChatGPT logs where people seemed to confess to crimes, share trade secrets & more potentially damning scenarios.  …

Well this is bad.  Google is indexing ChatGPT conversations exposing sensitive user data  —  I tried a few quick searches.  I found someone's chat where I can see their api key  —  I found some building their resume.  Their name, email and phone numbers are exposed.  —  www.fastc…

We just removed a feature from @ChatGPTapp that allowed users to make their conversations discoverable by search engines, such as Google. This was a short-lived experiment to help people discover useful conversations. This feature required users to opt-in, first by picking a chat…

@cryps1s @ChatGPTapp Good call for taking it off quickly and expected. If we want AI to be accessible we have to count that most users never read what they click. The friction for sharing potential private information should be greater than a checkbox or not exist at all. https:/…

@cryps1s @ChatGPTapp How is everyone is in support of removing this? This was one of my favorite features that I thought was very benefical for education on certain topics like nanotech and biotech

There are multiple ChatGPT chats indexed on search engines cause when sharing, there's an option to make it publicly available for discovery While that makes zero sense as a feature in the first place and will probably be removed, many people already clicked it [image]

@cryps1s @ChatGPTapp Kinda torn on this. I get why it had to go. But some of those shared chats were gold. Maybe we need a ‘Chat Library’ where users can intentionally publish helpful convos?
