Tim Cook says Apple is “significantly growing” its AI investment, reallocating staff to work on AI features, and “very open to M&A that accelerates our roadmap”

Apple's AI strategy and investment was on the mind of analysts on an earnings call …

CNBC Kif Leswing

Context & Ripple Effects

Apple’s posture has moved from Cook’s earlier description of AI as important but requiring unresolved issues to an explicit commitment of resources. In 2024, he said Apple was devoting substantial time and effort to AI features; this update adds staff reallocation and a stated willingness to use acquisitions.

The announcement matters because it turns an AI roadmap from a product-development priority into an organizational and capital-allocation decision, with Apple signaling it may supplement internal work with external capabilities.

First-order effects

  • Apple will shift employees toward AI-feature work, changing near-term staffing priorities across the company.
  • Apple’s openness to acquisitions expands the set of AI capabilities it could seek to obtain rather than develop solely in-house.

Second-order effects

  • AI-focused teams and potential acquisition targets may face stronger competition for talent and strategic assets as Apple pursues both internal development and possible deals.
  • Apple’s product groups will face greater pressure to translate the reallocated resources into AI features, making execution on the roadmap a more visible operating priority.

Third-order effects

  • If this pattern persists, leading consumer-platform companies will increasingly treat AI as a portfolio-wide resource-allocation decision—balancing internal R&D, workforce redeployment, and selective M&A rather than isolating it in a single team.
  • The result could be a more concentrated market for scarce AI talent and specialized technology, though the scale and targets of any Apple acquisitions remain unspecified.

The trend: This is one data point in the shift from cautious AI positioning to companywide build-buy-and-reallocate strategies among major technology platforms.

Cook indirectly addresses Jony Ive going to OpenAI.  Says the OpenAI screen-less device will be complementary not competitive to the iPhone (Sam Altman said something similar).  I'm surprised Cook said anything on the topic.  This tells me maybe Apple would be ok working with and…

To be sure, Cook has said several times that Apple is unafraid of big deals and they've still never done one. While I do think that AI changes that, Apple's pace of M&A has only slowed down dramatically in recent years and his comments today aren't a new line of thinking.

Tim Cook: AI is one of the most profound technologies of our lifetime. As for what pieces of the chain will be commoditized, I'm not talking about that on this call because I don't want to give away our strategy.

Apple: Our capex will increase substantially (due to AI). First time Apple has ever said that.

Final question on the call: Cook said Apple is “very open to M&A that accelerates the roadmap and isn't stuck on the size of the company.” My take: Perplexity. $AAPL
