Australia says it will include YouTube in its ban on social media for children under 16 years of age, reversing an earlier decision to exempt the platform
Australia said on Wednesday it will include Alphabet-owned (GOOGL.O) YouTube in its world-first ban on social media for teenagers …

Context & Ripple Effects
Australia’s Senate had already passed the under-16 social-media measure, with potential penalties for platforms, in an earlier legislative push for a youth social-media ban. A government-backed trial then found age checking technically feasible, removing a central implementation objection ahead of enforcement.
Including YouTube reverses its earlier carve-out and makes the policy a broader test of whether video platforms can be treated like social networks for youth-access rules. Later coverage in the corpus shows that YouTube ultimately said it would comply, underscoring the practical significance of the designation.
First-order effects
- YouTube must prepare to apply Australia’s under-16 access restrictions rather than rely on an exemption, affecting its youth audience and product operations in the country.
- Australia’s rules now place Alphabet’s video platform alongside other covered social-media services, creating a more uniform compliance perimeter.
Second-order effects
- Platforms covered by the ban face a shared need to operationalize age assurance; the earlier government-backed age-checking trial gives regulators a basis to expect implementation rather than accept technical infeasibility as a defense.
- The reversal narrows the value of service-specific exemptions, increasing pressure on other platforms to assess whether their core features could bring them within youth-access rules.
Third-order effects
- If replicated elsewhere, youth online-safety policy could shift from content-specific moderation toward access-control obligations that govern who may use a service at all.
- The key structural question is whether regulators can maintain a consistent boundary between video, social, and other digital services as platforms combine these functions.
The trend: This is one data point in the expansion of access-control regulation, where governments require platforms to verify or restrict user eligibility rather than solely police content.

So they either want YouTube to create shadow accounts for users or they want YouTube to nag a user every single new session to upload ID or do a face age test or some other high friction process of verification? Righteo then. [embedded post]

So Annika Wells just said on the ABC “YouTube needs to stop users being able to access age-restrictive in a logged-out state.” Meaning YouTube will have to assess the age of every user. It's not just “having an account.” — I honestly don't think they know what they're doing.

Heads up: YouTube's “Made for Kids 2.0” is coming next month. — In theory, restricting child accounts instead of punishing creators is exactly what we need. However, requiring ID to use YT is exactly the bad solution I feared. Also, it's AI. We all know how poorly that's gon…

YouTube kids is only safer because the US put in place laws to make platforms directed to under 12s include safety by design and privacy controls - Australia should look at this as a broader model for social media regulation instead of ineffective blanket bans

Age estimation is so unbelievably broken. I've seen men with big bushy beards get told they're a child on those face scans. It's just complete guesswork, but YouTube is doubling down on the guessing, almost like saying “We think you're a kid based on the fact that you made a Mi…

Steven Spielberg's first film when he was a child was created when he was 12. The YouTube Social Media Ban limiting creativity from the age of 16 will harm more than protect more. Bullies have caused our Australian government to react rather than nurture creativity. @TeamYouTube
