The European Commission says that France, Spain, Italy, Denmark, and Greece will test a blueprint for an age verification app meant to protect children online

if I live that long [embedded post] @bluespacecanary : Honestly I wish the EU would hurry up and do the thing it actually wants (banning American tech companies from operating there) so it can get a peek at the “finding out” stage (splintering because German tech companies are dictating what you can post in Greece and Italy) & then pivot to real policy [embedded post] Ryan Castellucci / @rya.nc : See also governments asking for backdoors in security software that only “the good guys” can use...  [embedded post] Mike Masnick / @mmasnick : EU is demanding that every site use age verification technology, while insisting it do things it cannot do, and behave in a manner it cannot behave.  This is not policy making.  This is wishful thinking, with a side of “we'll just blame the tech companies for not waving their magic wand.”  [embedded post] X: @eu_commission : 🔞 We go to great lengths to protect our children in the physical world, so why let them access harmful content online? We're launching the first prototype of an age verification app to help protect minors from harmful content. “Accurate and non-intrusive”, if it means “rigorously verifying exact age without any access to sensitive documents” is not only technologically infeasible, I'm pretty sure it's logically impossible [embedded post]

hey, if they can come up with an accurate, reliable, robust, non-intrusive, non-discriminatory ID and age verification service, I'll probably be happy to use it  —  if I live that long [embedded post]
