Daniel Gross leaves Safe Superintelligence, the AI startup he co-founded with Ilya Sutskever, to join Meta's new superintelligence lab and work on AI products

Daniel Gross, the former chief executive officer and co-founder of artificial intelligence startup Safe Superintelligence Inc. …

Bloomberg

Context & Ripple Effects

SSI was founded around a deliberately narrow mission: developing a safe superintelligence, with Sutskever distinguishing its safety focus from conventional trust-and-safety work in his initial outline of SSI's safety mandate. The company had also attracted major backing at a reported $5 billion valuation, making its founding team strategically important.

The move follows reports that Meta first pursued SSI itself and, after Sutskever declined, turned to recruiting Gross as an alternative route to its talent. SSI has responded by placing Sutskever in the CEO role and Daniel Levy in the presidency while keeping the technical team under Sutskever.

First-order effects

  • Meta adds an SSI co-founder to its new superintelligence lab, linking frontier-research leadership directly to the company's AI product work.
  • SSI loses a co-founder and former CEO, while its revised leadership structure concentrates technical oversight under Sutskever.

Second-order effects

  • Meta's unsuccessful pursuit of SSI has become a talent acquisition: other independent frontier labs face stronger pressure to retain founders and senior researchers without selling the company.
  • For SSI's investors and prospective partners, the leadership transition makes execution under Sutskever and Levy—not the original three-founder configuration—the immediate test of continuity.

Third-order effects

  • If large platforms repeatedly recruit leaders from independent labs rather than acquire the labs outright, frontier-AI competition may consolidate key personnel and productization capacity inside incumbents while the labs remain formally independent.
  • The episode reinforces AI industrialization: advanced research talent is increasingly valued not only for long-horizon research agendas, but for its ability to translate them into products at scaled platforms.

The trend: This is one data point in the institutionalization of frontier AI, where major platforms use targeted talent recruitment to build research-and-product organizations around advanced models.

Ilya and Daniel have assembled an incredible team and I'm honored to have been able to assist in getting SSI off the ground. The company's future is very bright, and I expect miracles to follow.

I wouldn't bet against Zuck and “Superintelligence” is a fun brand. At the same time, this feels, from miles away, soulless and wildly uninteresting. That being said, no one ever offered me $100mm as a signing bonus so who knows what I'd do.

A rare post from Ilya, Daniel Gross is out (likely heading to Meta), & SSI is now focused on developing superintelligence. On this occasion, I'm revising my estimate for achieving ASI from 2030 to 2029, less than four years away. This is the endgame in the age of intelligence.

It's funny that two Thiel protégés (Altman and Zuckerberg) are competing against each other. I thought only losers did that.

Meta paying up for OpenAI engs is fascinating. Founders get questions like “what if Google copies you?” or “what if they offer your key eng $5m?” These used to be hypothetical. Now Meta might be starting a trend where big co's recognize that some hires are literally priceless.

META STEALS CEO, SAFE SUPERINTELLIGENCE FOUNDER LEFT TO FLY SOLO Safe Superintelligence just lost Daniel Gross. Meta grabbed the CEO to run their AI division like it's the NBA draft. Now, co-founder Ilya Sutskever is flying solo and made it clear: “Yeah, Meta tried to buy us [ima…

Hearing about more senior departures for meta from all labs, will probably be public next week. Intense pressure on leadership at all labs to retain talent, with the usual suspects feeling heat the most

I sent the following message to our team and investors: — As you know, Daniel Gross's time with us has been winding down, and as of June 29 he is officially no longer a part of SSI.  We are grateful for his early contributions to the company and wish him well in his next endeavor…

@rapha_gl Very bearish. It shows that 1. Ilya is not a leader (most researchers struggle at this) 2. SSI has nothing if NFDG assets are being sold for the move to Meta

Ilya announces the resignation of Daniel Gross. He also doubles down on his straight shot path to super intelligence and rebuff of acquisition offers. Gotta love that conviction. [image]

Ilya is now the CEO, CTO, and CSO of SSI. His $32B AI start-up that has no product, no revenue, and no legit website Now that's some real market power!! 🚀🚀

Ilya Sutskever, co‑founder of OpenAI, is now leading his own startup, Safe Superintelligence, after Meta poached his CEO. Talent wars are heating up, AI safety is now competing directly with platform giants for top minds.

SCOOP on the tender offer for LPs in Nat Friedman & Daniel Gross's NFDG funds. Meta is offering to buy up to 49% of the holdings at face value - quite unusual at a time when secondaries are done at steep discounts. Meta won't have info rights in portcos https://www.wsj.com/...

Started work at Meta this week. My job is to make amazing AI products that billions of people love to use. It won't happen overnight, but a few days in, I'm feeling confident that great things are ahead.
