OpenAI says it is “working on implementing a mitigation” to a ChatGPT, Sora, and API issue causing “elevated error rates and latency”, starting at around 3am ET

The chatbot is slow to respond for some users, and down completely for others.

The Verge Jess Weatherbed

Context & Ripple Effects

This is another cross-product reliability incident for OpenAI, following a December disruption in which ChatGPT, the API, and Sora traffic largely recovered only after a multi-hour outage, and a subsequent December recovery across the same services.

The recurrence matters because the API turns a consumer-service disruption into an operational issue for companies that embed OpenAI models in their own products. An earlier December incident was attributed to a telemetry deployment for Kubernetes metrics, illustrating how supporting infrastructure can affect customer-facing AI services.

First-order effects

  • ChatGPT and Sora users face slower or unavailable sessions while OpenAI deploys its mitigation.
  • API customers can see failed or delayed model requests, disrupting applications and workflows that depend on OpenAI responses in real time.

Second-order effects

  • Businesses using the API may need to invoke existing retries, fallbacks, or manual processes until service performance stabilizes; downstream users experience the interruption through those products.
  • Repeated simultaneous issues across ChatGPT, Sora, and the API make service-status communication and incident handling more consequential for OpenAI’s developer and enterprise customers.

Third-order effects

  • If cross-product outages continue, reliability—not just model capability—will become a clearer differentiator among AI platforms, increasing the value of resilient application design and multi-provider options.
  • The pattern points toward more formal operational governance around AI infrastructure, including better change controls and observability, though this incident does not establish its root cause.

The trend: As AI services become embedded in consumer tools and business workflows, platform uptime and operational resilience are becoming core competitive attributes.

Today's outage is a reminder that you should be able to hotswap out the AI API you are using in your apps for one by another provider in the event of issues (though different models do prompt a little bit differently & you also want to make sure they have similar capabilities)
