Meta knows it made the Trillion-Dollar Mistake (betting against LLMs) and is trying to spend $$$ to recover. The issue they're going to run into is that top AI researchers are already rich, and most don't want to work on AI friends for teens or headsets for the military.

This would be a super gutsy move by Meta considering report of DOJ's investigation into its Character dot ai deal. Both reports and deals seem very similar for two companies in district court(s) for antitrust enforcement action. [image]

good morning to folks in the valley waking up to this late night story drop one thing: there's some question among would-be recruits if meta can remain a good long term actor in the space If you're a doomer or concerned about building AGI, do you want to do that at meta?
  • @david_kasten Dave Kasten on x
Weird how NYT writes that one of the most successful tech companies of all time is working on superintelligence, and then immediately says that even artificial general intelligence “is an ambition with no clear path to success.” Well, Facebook M&A rolls to disbelieve.

Zuckerberg's secret weapon all day long is money. And he knows it. he can throw wheelbarrows of cash and stock at a very small talent pool. startups cannot do this in the same way without constantly raising more cash. Google and Microsoft, on the other hand....
  • @mikeisaac Rat King on x
but there are limits to money, and what a lot of the top labs have are important: true believers for some folks who are already getting paid more money than they could ever spend in a lifetime, ideology is more important than zeros in a paycheck
  • @kevinroose Kevin Roose on x
Whether or not this strategy works, it's interesting that AGI/ASI has become such a powerful concept that tech companies have to believe in it (or at least pretend to) in order to have a shot at hiring good researchers.

talent market for top AI researchers right now is “unlike anything folks have ever seen” according to sources ceos of top AI companies cold emailing twentysomething year old kids who have spent years working on frontier AI models with multimillion dollar offers

Paying $$$ for top AI researchers is the name of the game but Scale seems like a weird choice here. Great business, but not really known as a research lab despite marketing. Fresh start is good but $10B for this versus OpenAI/Anthropic VPs is ... not an obvious slam dunk IMO.

zuckerberg has set billions of dollars on fire on gibberish and copycat garbage, can't competently manage the scale of his primary business, has zero ethics or original ideas, and can't innovate his way out of a paper bag  —  yet U.S. “business journalism” never makes any of that…

Ohhh it was a soft acquisition!  Very interesting.  So Scale A.I. is basically Meta now?  Has the consolidation begun?  Alex Wang (their CEO) is now a Meta exec?  Very weird [embedded post]

so basically meta is buying scale ai, but below a threshold to trigger reviews etc [image]
