Windsurf says Anthropic gave five days of notice before cutting nearly all its first-party capacity to all Claude 3.x models, after passing it over for Claude 4

Windsurf, the popular vibe coding startup that's reportedly being acquired by OpenAI, said Anthropic significantly reduced …

TechCrunch Maxwell Zeff

Context & Ripple Effects

The cutoff landed while Windsurf was reportedly the subject of an OpenAI acquisition agreement, making its reliance on a competing frontier-model supplier commercially sensitive. Two days later, Anthropic co-founder Jared Kaplan tied the access decision largely to reports of that prospective acquisition in Anthropic’s explanation of the cutoff.

First-order effects

  • Windsurf loses nearly all first-party capacity for Claude 3.x with only five days to adjust, forcing it to manage product availability and model routing under a sharply reduced Anthropic allocation.
  • Anthropic immediately gains tighter control over how its models are supplied to a coding-tool company reportedly moving toward a rival model provider.

Second-order effects

  • The episode raises the operational value of multi-provider model stacks for AI coding products: access obtained through one provider can become fragile when ownership or partnership incentives change.
  • Any OpenAI-Windsurf transaction becomes harder to assess as a simple distribution gain, because model access and the ability to substitute providers become part of the product’s continuity risk.

Third-order effects

  • If frontier labs increasingly ration direct capacity around competitive conflicts, model access will be treated less like a neutral cloud input and more like a strategic channel controlled by suppliers.
  • That would favor coding platforms with durable direct partnerships or credible fallback models, while making consolidation a trigger for suppliers to reassess commercial access.

The trend: This is one data point in frontier-model providers using capacity allocation and API access as strategic leverage as AI application companies consolidate.

With less than five days of notice, Anthropic decided to cut off nearly all of our first-party capacity to all Claude 3.x models. Given the short notice, we may see some short-term Claude 3.x model availability issues as we have very quickly ramped up capacity on other inference
