Recall's rollout had already been reshaped after Microsoft moved it to opt-in, added encryption for its search index, and required Windows Hello protections in its revised privacy safeguards. Signal had separately been tightening security in its desktop software, including work on how encryption keys are stored in its desktop-app security update. Its new default extends that defensive posture to what the operating system can capture from the app.
