Robinhood acquires Toronto-based WonderFi, which owns Bitbuy, Coinsquare, and other crypto exchanges, for CA$250M, or CA$0.36 per share, set to close in H2 2025

After spending years gobbling up other Canadian cryptocurrency companies, Toronto-based WonderFi has agreed to be acquired by American trading platform Robinhood Markets.

Context & Ripple Effects

WonderFi arrived at this deal after building a portfolio of Canadian crypto businesses, including Bitbuy and Coinsquare. For Robinhood, it extends an acquisition path that already included a planned $200M purchase of crypto exchange Bitstamp.

The transaction matters because it combines a consolidated local exchange group with a larger U.S. trading platform, making Canada part of Robinhood’s broader crypto-expansion strategy rather than a standalone market bet.

First-order effects

  • WonderFi shareholders are slated to receive CA$0.36 per share, subject to the transaction closing, while Bitbuy and Coinsquare move toward common ownership under Robinhood.
  • Robinhood gains control of WonderFi’s exchange portfolio, giving it an immediate Canadian operating footprint rather than building one asset by asset.

Second-order effects

  • The deal raises the competitive bar for Canadian crypto platforms: rivals will have to contend with Bitbuy and Coinsquare backed by Robinhood’s broader trading platform and acquisition capacity.
  • Robinhood will need to determine how closely to integrate WonderFi’s brands and operations with its other crypto assets, including the planned Bitstamp acquisition, making execution and product positioning central to the value of the combined portfolio.

Third-order effects

  • If this pattern continues, retail trading platforms may increasingly enter or expand in crypto markets through acquisitions of established local operators, concentrating exchange ownership across fewer multi-market platforms.
  • That consolidation could shift competition away from standalone exchange brands toward the breadth of products, distribution, and operating scale a parent platform can bring; the degree of integration remains uncertain.

The trend: Robinhood’s WonderFi deal is part of a broader shift toward acquisition-led consolidation of crypto exchange infrastructure by diversified retail trading platforms.
