Google says some terms in AI Overviews will link to Google's search results “to help people more easily explore topics and discover relevant websites”

From Google: “To help people more easily explore topics & discover relevant websites, we've added links to some terms within AI Overviews when our systems determine it might be useful.” #seo

Search Engine Land Barry Schwartz

Context & Ripple Effects

Google had already expanded AI Overviews internationally and added links alongside generated answers in 2024; this change refines that discovery layer by making selected terms within the response routes into further Google searches. It also extends Google’s earlier effort to add explanatory context around results through its “About This Result” information panel.

The key distinction is destination: these new in-answer links lead to Google result pages, where users may then encounter publisher sites, rather than necessarily sending traffic directly to a cited source.

First-order effects

  • Users who select eligible terms in an AI Overview will start a follow-on Google search from inside the generated answer, creating an additional navigation path within Search.
  • Publishers may gain exposure only if their pages rank in those subsequent result sets; Google retains control over which terms receive links and what results those links surface.

Second-order effects

  • SEO teams will have a stronger incentive to identify the topic expansions implied by AI Overview language and compete for visibility on those follow-up queries, not solely the original query.
  • Referral measurement becomes less direct: a user journey can move from an AI answer to another Google results page before reaching a site, making the value of AI Overview presence more dependent on downstream ranking.

Third-order effects

  • If this pattern broadens, AI answers may function increasingly as an internal query-refinement interface, concentrating more of topic exploration within Google before users reach the open web.
  • That raises the strategic importance of AI Overview link placement and publisher visibility in underlying results, even as the eventual traffic impact remains dependent on user click behavior and ranking outcomes.

The trend: Google is turning AI-generated answers from a destination into a guided navigation layer that channels users through additional Search queries.
