The people who say AI has no worthwhile uses at all are quite obviously wrong, but the CEOs who think they can replace substantial numbers of workers with LLMs are going to quickly realize their mistake when their business becomes less effective and innovative. www.theverge.com/n…

Old and salty enough to remember this kind of chat about off-shoring dev roles in the 2000s.  Never really achieved the scale that matched the hype though did it?  —  Similar issues at play really when you boil it down.  [embedded post]

This is so appallingly wrong-headed, not only would I never want to work at Shopify, I'm probably going to try to avoid using their checkouts online as much as I can.  (May not be 100% possible but I'm gonna try.)  —  So gross! [embedded post]

Tobias Lütke is laying it out there: CEOs will eliminate your job when AI is ready.  —  It's long past time for the entire tech industry to unionize and strike.  Capitalist greed is insatiable, and without guardrails, it will never stop.  —  https://www.theverge.com/...  #unioniz…

It's now clear that AI is already pretty good at planning, brainstorming, and programming. No one knows how much AI will improve, but even modest, incremental improvements will make using it essential to staying competitive. Learn to use it or be left behind.

Fundamentally low-trust leadership He doesn't trust his team to use tools effectively, and he doesn't even trust himself to persuade them It's depressing how hard it is to find organizations that aren't run like this :(

LEAKED internal memo from CEO of Shopify @tobi around AI 10 quick takeaways i have after reading it: 1. a subtle but huge reframe: “hire an AI before you hire a human.” 2. AI is now a baseline expectation at shopify. hiring filters will probably favor ai-fluent candidates at [ima…

At @Shopify, AI isn't optional. It's essential. If you're not using it to move faster, make better decisions, or build smarter... You're already behind.

There were ux designers out there that didn't want to learn visual design, dev or anything “extra” and now out of work - even though there were clear signs. There will be designers of all types that don't take AI seriously and will be out of work - even with clear signs.

Every large company that doesn't implement a version of this will die.. Harsh truth: It's very hard to change habits, and most people are not seeing the “value of AI” because they're too lazy to try. Stop bookmarking things and start experimenting!

Crazy how tech went from “overhiring” to “no headcount if things can be done by AI” in just a few years Meaning: - talents from previous bubble wouldn't be absorbed back 100% - entry/junior level who used to do the repetitive tasks wouldn't be needed

AI is now a requirement at Shopify “The prototype phase of any “Get Shit Done” project should be dominated by AI exploration” Usage is now a part of performance reviews 👀 [image]

The fundamental thing companies need to do to drive AI adoption is make sure it's part of the e2e employee lifecycle - planning headcount - interviewing - onboarding - team rituals - promos & perf The fundamental thing teammates need to do to adapt is experiment and share.

Tobi, CEO of Shopify shared an internal memo on AI yesterday. The part on how Shopify was using AI in its workforce was interesting, but this sentence on requiring staff to improve 20-40% YoY just to requalify and match the company's high growth rate really stuck with me. This [i…
