Midjourney debuts V7 in alpha, its first new AI image model in nearly a year with a “totally different architecture”, a week after OpenAI's new image generator

Midjourney, one of the first AI-based image generators on the web, has released its first new AI image model in nearly a year.

TechCrunch Kyle Wiggers

Context & Ripple Effects

Midjourney had already been refining its image models through V6, where coverage noted a changed prompting approach and unusually detailed output in the V6 release. It also broadened access by making web-based image generation available beyond its prior Discord-centered power-user audience in its web access expansion.

V7 arrives as an alpha and follows OpenAI’s new image-generator release by a week, making architecture change—not merely a routine version increment—the salient competitive move.

First-order effects

  • Midjourney users can begin testing a new image model after a long gap between major releases, while the alpha label signals that feedback and iteration remain part of the rollout.
  • A “totally different architecture” gives Midjourney a new technical baseline against which users will compare results with both V6 and OpenAI’s newly released generator.

Second-order effects

  • Image-generation users and creative teams gain another reason to re-evaluate model choice and prompting practices, especially because V6 had already required a different prompting approach.
  • The release increases pressure on image-model vendors to differentiate through model quality and usable product access, rather than relying on an established community alone.

Third-order effects

  • If major image-model updates increasingly coincide with broader web access, the category may compete less as a niche community tool and more as a mainstream creative-production service; Midjourney’s move beyond Discord-gated access is an early indicator.
  • Midjourney’s later move to let subscribers animate images through its V1 video model suggests a possible structural direction: still-image generation becoming an entry point to broader generative-media workflows, though adoption and economics will determine how far that consolidation goes.

The trend: Generative-image companies are moving toward faster architecture refreshes and broader creative-media workflows as image generation becomes a more mainstream product category.

One of the most exciting new features for our new V7 model is something we call “Draft Mode”. Draft mode is half the cost and 10 times the speed and it might be the best way to iterate on ideas ever. Try it with voice, think out loud and let our ideas flow like liquid dreams. [vi…

MidJourney v7 is out! On my usual benchmark prompts, it only (kinda) gets one, though 😕 v6 was able to nail the pixel art, v7 regresses in this regard. Prompts in alt, all were done on Fast w/o personalization [image]
