Roblox rolls out new parental controls, including to let parents block and report people on their child's friends list, building on changes it made in 2024

They'll be able to block specific experiences, too. … Roblox is introducing new parental controls that give parents more tools …

The Verge Jay Peters

Context & Ripple Effects

Roblox had already moved from hard-to-find settings toward more formal safety controls, including work on content ratings and easier parental-control access. Its November 2024 update linked parent and child accounts and restricted some text chat for under-13 users, while limiting under-13 access to certain interactive social experiences addressed risk at the experience level.

The new tools extend that framework into two areas parents can act on directly: a child’s social graph and individual experiences. That makes safety controls more granular than the earlier parent-linked account and chat restrictions.

First-order effects

  • Parents can now remove or report people connected to their child and block specific experiences, giving them direct controls over both contact and access.
  • Roblox must handle parent-originated reports and enforce experience-level blocks alongside its existing account-linking and chat restrictions.

Second-order effects

  • Experience creators have a stronger incentive to make their games understandable and acceptable to parents, since a block can remove an experience from a child’s available catalog.
  • More parent reporting can surface safety concerns through a distinct channel, increasing pressure on Roblox’s moderation workflows and on users who rely on friend-list access.

Third-order effects

  • If Roblox continues adding controls at the account, social, and experience layers, child safety becomes a product-architecture issue rather than a standalone settings page.
  • The pattern points toward age- and permission-based access systems becoming a core way youth-oriented platforms govern social interaction and content discovery.

The trend: Roblox is moving toward layered, parent-managed access controls that govern who children can interact with and what parts of the platform they can enter.
