Sam Altman says OpenAI will support Anthropic's Model Context Protocol, an open-source standard that connects AI models to data for more relevant answers
OpenAI is embracing rival Anthropic's standard for connecting AI assistants to the systems where data resides.

Context & Ripple Effects
Anthropic introduced MCP as an open-source way for AI assistants to connect with data sources; OpenAI’s support turns a rival-originated protocol into a more credible cross-model integration layer. Anthropic’s initial MCP release framed the standard around making assistants more relevant by giving them access to where data resides.
The significance is not a change in model behavior itself, but a potential common interface between models and enterprise data systems. That distinction matters as OpenAI, Google, and Anthropic have otherwise pursued differing approaches to shaping model responses. Their divergent model-behavior approaches make shared integration plumbing comparatively valuable.
First-order effects
OpenAI users and developers can connect OpenAI models through MCP-compatible data integrations rather than treating the protocol as exclusive to Anthropic’s ecosystem.
Anthropic gains validation for MCP as an open standard: a major model rival adopting it expands the protocol’s relevance beyond Claude.
Second-order effects
Tool vendors and enterprise teams have a stronger incentive to build MCP integrations once they can potentially serve multiple leading model providers, reducing duplicated connector work.
Other AI platforms face pressure to support the same interface or explain why customers should accept model-specific integration paths; Microsoft’s later MCP support in Windows illustrates the protocol’s reach into platform software.
Third-order effects
If adoption continues, the competitive boundary may shift: proprietary models can still differentiate on capability and behavior while context access becomes interoperable infrastructure.
A broadly used context protocol could improve workload portability for buyers, though control over permissions, data governance, and the quality of connected tools would remain important sources of platform leverage.
The trend: AI providers are increasingly competing above a shared integration layer, where open protocols can make models easier to swap while concentrating differentiation in capability, governance, and product experience.
people love MCP and we are excited to add support across our products. available today in the agents SDK and support for chatgpt desktop app + responses api coming soon!
MCP 🤝 OpenAI Agents SDK You can now connect your Model Context Protocol servers to Agents: https://openai.github.io/... We're also working on MCP support for the OpenAI API and ChatGPT desktop app—we'll share some more news in the coming months.
Excited to see the MCP love spread to OpenAI - welcome! MCP has gone from a glimmer in @jspahrsummers and @dsp_'s eyes last year to a thriving open standard with thousands of integrations and growing. LLMs are most useful when connecting to the data you already have and software
OpenAI adopting MCP is great news. MCP is increasingly becoming the standard for how AI systems can talk to other tools. As AI Agents from multiple platforms coordinate work, AI interoperability is going to be critical.
It's been a wild journey of us @AnthropicAI trying to convince people to adopt MCP just a couple of months ago to OpenAI and many others now adopting it. Another huge vote of confidence for MCP becoming the world's standard.
well, that seals the deal folks... MCP IS EVERYWHERE get your tools set up on https://mcp.run/ and we'll make it easy to get real work done in every app on the planet
