Mozilla responds to backlash over Firefox's new Terms of Use, which critics have called out for being overly broad, and says it won't use people's data for AI

“These changes are not driven by a desire by Mozilla to use people's data for AI or sell it to advertisers,” Mozilla spokesperson Kenya Friend-Daniel said in an email to TechCrunch.  techcrunch.com/2025/... Ludovic Chabant / @ludovic.chabant.com : Mozilla recently changed Firefox's ToS and everyone is (rightfully) freaking out.  The most telling is this change to the welcome page shown after a software update.  “Unlike other companies, we don't sell access to your data” is gone.  Mozilla is an ads company now.  [image] Michael / @donohoe.dev : Mozilla deleted the following text from its Terms of Service:  —  “Does Firefox sell your personal data?  Nope.  Never have, never will.  And we protect you from many of the advertisers who do.  Firefox products are designed to protect your privacy.  That's a promise.”  —  github.com/mozilla/bedr... Mastodon: Joe Ortiz / @joeo10@mastodon.sdf.org : Meanwhile, #Mozilla continues they're series of own goals and irrelevance by instituting a new ToS for #Firefox and removing language that they don't sell your data (which they now will do).  —  https://arstechnica.com/...  They're response which is obviously bullshit.  —  https://techcrunch.com/... … @AAKL@infosec.exchange : Dear Mozilla: I know privacy doesn't put bread on your table.  But the fact is, you are where are today because of a series of ill-inspired decisions by YOU.  Instead of correcting course, you are compounding the errors, and throwing Firefox users under the bus. … Michael K Johnson / @mcdanlj@social.makerforums.info : I am not a lawyer and wish to learn.  What about “That's a promise” does not constitute estoppel?  —  https://github.com/...  #mozilla  —  [image] Emanuele / @emanuele@m.divita.eu : #Mozilla has just deleted the following:  —  “Does #Firefox sell your personal data?”  —  “Nope.  Never have, never will.  And we protect you from many of the advertisers who do.  Firefox products are designed to protect your #privacy.  That's a promise. ”  —  https://github.com/... … Tevin / @tevin@mastodon.tevinzhang.com : Mozilla removed the promise to “never sell your personal data” from its FAQ.  —  Time to switch  —  https://github.com/...  #mozilla #firefox #privacy PoempelFox / @PoempelFox@social.tchncs.de : So if you believed the massive BS that Mozilla uttered when they were caught changing TOU to basically allow them to steal everything you enter in the browser, you'll be delighted to hear that they also removed any promises to not steal and sell your data from their FAQ 3 days ago. https://github.com/... … Caolan McMahon / @caolan@hachyderm.io : Sigh.  The Firefox data fire sale continues.  —  https://github.com/...  With every new thread I think “maybe this is an over-reaction and Mozilla have boring operational reasons that don't compromise their mission”.  But I can't deny, the behaviour of a company planning to sell all your data to an LLM vendor would look exactly like this. … X: @lundukejournal : Mozilla has just deleted the following: “Does Firefox sell your personal data?” “Nope.
