Don't let yourself be fooled by some of today's tech news articles.  —  Skype was ahead of its competition in terms of features by a full DECADE.  It failed because of Microsoft's chaotic leadership.  There are numerous similar examples of this.  It's Microsoft execs.  It's alway…

This is bad and dumb.  Microsoft is killing off Skype in May, just a few weeks' time, to force everyone onto Teams.  I've used Skype for 20+ years, still use it all the time for media interviews.  Microsoft Teams is awful, and sucks so bad that MS has to kill Skype to keep Teams …

Skype was useful for calls to phone lines still quite recently, but no longer even for that.

Microsoft's utter mishandling of Skype, ruining the product and ceding ground to competitors exactly when video and voice over internet took off, should make for a good business case study someday

It took Russians to kill ICQ, but only Microsoft could fuck up Skype.  Well done, morons.  [embedded post]

Skype was a victim of Microsoft's focus on Windows to the detriment of every other platform and a culture of mismanaging acquisitions under Steve Ballmer.  —  It was a great product in its heyday but that hasn't been the case in over a decade.

Skype shutting down in May?  —  This string was found in latest Skype for Windows preview that says:  —  “Starting in May, Skype will no longer be available.  Continue your calls and chats in Teams.”  —  No comment from Microsoft yet.  Details here:  —  www.xda-developers.com/mic…

Striking story of plucking failure from the jaws of success, from repeated poor foresight, to dogmatic development for the wrong markets, etc.  Skype to Shut 14 Years After Microsoft's $8.5 Billion Purchase https://www.bloomberg.com/...

Good example of how being slightly easier to use and more reliable (Zoom) makes alternatives feel intolerable.  It's hard to even describe the difference in terms of “features,” but everyone could feel the quality delta instantly.

Today @microsoft is shutting down @Skype — it makes me incredibly sad, but I am not surprised. Microsoft bought and killed Skype, plain and simple. It is what should be labeled as corporate murder. I could write a ph.d dissertation on this — for now this is all I have to say.

Skype has been the worst messenger for years, by a long margin. I won't miss it one bit. It was so so so bad.

I remember when investing in Discord in 2015 how Skype was the juggernaut that gamers used to connect around live gaming. Between Skype, TeamSpeak and Mumble many gamers told me Discord would never have much chance. Less than a decade later....
