WBD closes three game studios and cancels a highly anticipated Wonder Woman title in a bid to boost the profitability of its interactive entertainment business

- Company halts work on highly anticipated Wonder Woman title  — Closures follow several disappointing releases last year

Bloomberg Jason Schreier

Context & Ripple Effects

WBD’s intervention follows $300M in 2024 gaming writedowns and internal criticism of the division’s strategic direction. It also comes after the reported $200M loss on Suicide Squad, making profitability—not simply release cadence—the immediate test for the games business.

The reversal is notable because Warner Bros. gaming had previously been retained for its perceived growth potential. Closing studios and ending a major licensed project signals a much narrower tolerance for development risk.

First-order effects

  • Three WBD game studios cease operations, directly disrupting their teams and removing their current development capacity from the publisher’s slate.
  • Work on the Wonder Woman game stops, eliminating a prominent future use of WBD’s DC intellectual property and avoiding its remaining development costs.

Second-order effects

  • WBD’s remaining games teams face a higher approval bar: projects will need a clearer route to profitability before receiving continued investment.
  • The cancellations reduce near-term opportunities for external development partners and vendors tied to the affected studios and project, while concentrating WBD’s interactive bets in fewer teams.

Third-order effects

  • The move adds to evidence that large publishers are responding to costly underperformance by pruning portfolios and consolidating around fewer, higher-conviction titles; Microsoft’s Bethesda studio consolidation reflects a similar operating response.
  • If this pattern persists, ownership of valuable entertainment IP will not by itself sustain broad internal game-development footprints; capital discipline and portfolio selection become more decisive than the number of franchises pursued.

The trend: Major game publishers are shifting from expansive IP-led production slates toward tighter portfolios designed to limit the cost of failed long-cycle releases.

By the time David Zaslav took over WB Discovery in April 2022, Monolith had already gone almost five years without shipping a game and lost almost its entire leadership team under Haddad's management

I see a lot of people responding to this news with complaints about David Zaslav, but it was president David Haddad who ran Warner Bros. Games for the last decade and who was responsible for overseeing all of the studios and their output.

The shutdown of Monolith Productions today also saw the erasure of the studio's website, which dates back to the 1990s As of last week, it displayed a timeline of Monolith's best work Today, https://lith.com/ redirects to https://warnerbrosgames.com/ https://www.gamefile.news/..…

Monolith Productions, the company behind F.E.A.R., Condemned, Blood, Mordor Series, and No One Lives Forever... Warner Bros forced them into Wonder Woman Purgatory, made them waste millions on a product that was a waste of time and then killed them. Fuck This Industry

WB fucking suck. Cancelling the game is one thing, sure, whatever. But shutting down Monolith altogether is ridiculous. What do you have now? Rocksteady making another Batman game that'll come out in 2030? Hogwarts Legacy 2? Bunch of idiots running that company

    >WBG patents the nemesis system from Shadow of Mordor in 2021. Makes it so no other game company can use a similar system >Annouces a Wonder Woman the same year >No info for 4 years >Cancels the game by shutting down the studio making it [image]

Rip monolith. This is just messed up and they patented the nemesis system for fuck all nothing

DAAAAAMN! Can they at least license that nemesis system? It being tied to only two games since its existence is criminal 🥴

Every loss here is a significant one and I hope everyone lands on their feet. The loss of Monolith especially will be felt, as there's just so much history there for gaming as a whole that's just gone now.

This comes right before WB Discovery reports earnings, and the most ghoulish part of the statement is mentioning profitability right after talking about upending people's lives. The publisher calls it a “tough decision” and a “difficult” day is “excited” to make more money. [imag…

Seeing Monolith Productions shutting down definitely hits the hardest here. Even though they haven't done much recently, it's almost impossible to overstate just how much those guys used to cook when it came to FPS games back in the day.
