The article says that it is unclear what the Biden administration knew about this. I'm going to go out on a limb and speculate wildly: the U.K. was not doing this without some degree of collaboration and encouragement from its close ally.

So if you use an Apple (or WhatsApp or Google or Signal) product here to encrypt your US data or talk to your contacts in the US, and any of those companies have business in the U.K. (they all do), the U.K. can demand that the company disable encryption.

Let's be clear about what this means. The U.K. has a law that allows it to issue “technical capability notices” that require firms to disable (essentially “backdoor") their encryption technology. They appear to have issued one to Apple.

That's always been the beauty of the Five Eyes arrangement. The US may have all kinds of pesky barriers like the Bill of Rights, to prevent warrantless spying on US citizens' encrypted data. But the U.K. doesn't.
