OpenAI debuts Deep Research, an AI agent for creating in-depth reports, available to $200/month ChatGPT Pro subscribers and limited to 100 queries per month

OpenAI is announcing a new AI “agent” designed to help people conduct in-depth, complex research using ChatGPT, the company's AI-powered chatbot platform.

Yet another new feature gated behind a $200/month subscription.  This one is particularly egregious given Gemini has it for $20/month. https://openai.com/...

today we launch deep research, our next agent. this is like a superpower; experts on demand! it can go use the internet, do complex research and reasoning, and give you back a report. it is really good, and can do tasks that would take hours/days and cost hundreds of dollars.
  • @sama Sam Altman on x
way back on friday, the high score on “humanity's last exam” was o3-mini-high at 13%. now on sunday, deep research gets 26.6%.
  • @gdb Greg Brockman on x
Deep Research is an extremely simple agent — an o3 model which can browse the web and execute python code — and is already quite useful. It's been eye-opening how many people at OpenAI have been using it as a much better e-commerce search in particular.
  • @sama Sam Altman on x
(note: this is not the “one-more-thing” for o3-mini. few more days for that.)
  • @sama Sam Altman on x
congrats to the team, especially @isafulf and @EdwardSun0909, for building an incredible product. my very approximate vibe is that it can do a single-digit percentage of all economically valuable tasks in the world, which is a wild milestone.

OpenAI's deep research is very good. Unlike Google's version, which is a summarizer of many sources, OpenAI is more like engaging an opinionated (often almost PhD-level!) researcher who follows lead. Look at how it hunts down a concept in the literature (& works around problems) …
  • @sama Sam Altman on x
this version will have something like 10/month in our plus tier and a very small number in our plus tier, but we are working on a more efficient version. (this version is built on o3.)
  • @gergelyorosz Gergely Orosz on x
OpenAI launched an AI agent that goes off on the internet to do... deep research. Soon enough a website visitor will mean that it could be an AI agent like this one. Expect the internet to become even more closed off: more of the valuable data going behind paywalls & captchas

Playing with Operator and both Google's Deep Research and OpenAI's, I agree with Ethan: access to gated documents, and a much better inline pdf OCR, will be huge. The Google Books lawsuit which killed it looks like a massive harm to humanity and science in retrospect.

Congrats to OpenAI on getting 26.6 on HLE with deep research! We look forward to evaling OpenAI deep research on the Humanity Last Exam private set soon! [image]

Deep research is built for people who do intensive knowledge work in areas like finance, science, policy & engineering and need thorough & reliable research. It's also useful for discerning shoppers looking for hyper-personalized recos on purchases that require careful research. …

OpenAI Deep Research early access was the main reason for revising my prediction! I can now see the path toward rapid medical advances with these immensely powerful AI agents. We still have a few roadblocks left-but none are insurmountable. The future is looking better every day!…

Excited to try this out though with a doubling on Humanity's Last Exam and o3-mini already getting into potentially dangerous territory on some capabilities, I'm sad there wasn't a system card or even any brief discussion of red teaming

this might be one of the greatest new products i've used in a very long time. shoutout all the incredible people that made this happen. truly incredible AI system.

A note for instructors assigning research projects (a very effective assignment & key to academia in many ways). You need to understand how far Google & OpenAI's Deep Research tools compromise this work. You cannot just let learners use AI and assume they will need to fix flaws.

it is very compute-intensive and slow, but it's the first ai system that can do such a wide variety of complex, valuable tasks. going live in our pro tier now, with 100 queries per month. plus, team, and enterprise will come soon, and then free tier.

people will post lots of great examples, but here is a fun one: i am in japan right now and looking for an old NSX. i spent hours searching unsuccessfully for the perfect one. i was about to give up and deep research just...found it.

Very excited to finally share OpenAI's “deep research” model, which achieves twice the score of o3-mini on Humanity's Last Exam, and can even perform some tasks that would take PhD experts 10+ hours to do! A few thoughts on the implications: Deep research can be seen as a new [im…

I can finally reveal that I've had early access to @OpenAI's Deep Research since Friday & I've been using it nonstop! It's an absolute game-changer for scientific research, publishing, legal documents, medicine, education-from my tests but likely many others. I'm just blown away!

OpenAI just launched an autonomous research assistant, Deep Research. We've been testing it for a few days @Every and it's like a bazooka for the curious mind: - Give it a question, and it will autonomously search the web (or provided sources) to compile an answer - It does [imag…

@OpenAI 's deep research model has been trained to dig deep and be more persistent, reviewing dozens+ sources and taking 10+ minutes. Here we evaluate a breakdown of the model's capability both by dollar value and time to complete the task. https://openai.com/... [image]

Just remember that Deep research (OpenAI), Deep Research (Google Gemini) and DeepSeek (from DeepSeek) are unrelated. Also o3-mini-high is a great model up there with o1-pro and definitely better than 4o. (I really want to stop tweeting about OpenAI's naming, but they force me)

Excited to finally share what I've been working on since joining OpenAI last June! The goal of deep-research is to enable reasoning models with tools to tackle long-horizon tasks in the real world and discover new knowledge. It's a highly autonomous agent—hand it a hard problem,
  • @afinetheorem Kevin A. Bryan on x
The new OpenAI model announced today is quite wild. It is essentially Google's Deep Research idea with multistep reasoning, web search, *and* the o3 model underneath (as far as I know). It sometimes takes a half hour to answer. Let me show you an example. 1/x [image]
