Think this is the right take. Meta was very bad at content moderation so the change is good but pretending this is about free speech is stupid www.techdirt.com/2025/01/08/ t...

As Masnick says, this whole thing is clearly for political show. That's it. There's no other motivation. — And it won't help Meta's fortunes under Trump's administration. — And it will hurt real people in real ways. [embedded post]

The whole Texas thing feels like it has more to do with signaling alignment with other well known Texas moves that have been made, by Rogan and Musk for example, than anything else. — But that might be my own bias messing with me.

Even when Facebook finally admits it's pulled back from moderation responsibilities and publicly tosses up its hands at the mere suggestion of doing the right thing, it still takes the time to censor people who point this out. What a petty, stupid company. https://www.404media.c…

I worked at Meta for 10 years, and spent 2.5 years on the “community integrity” team in charge of building the first moderation tools. This new FB moderation announcement is a tragic backward step, but incredibly calculated. Strong reasons exist, but not fun ones. 🧵1/5

A reminder that many useful Community Notes on X cite as evidence articles researched and published by traditional fact-checking organisations around the world, the very same ones that are apparently useless, biased and unreliable.

Meta is not making changes to content moderation — they still have their army of moderators — just their professional fact checking program. This touched only a tiny fraction of all content. The whole network did ~12 fact checks per day. This was part of the problem with it.

This is a key point. When people say Community Notes coverage is too low, it strikes me as a strange criticism given that the alternative approach has dramatically lower coverage
