Disney and Fubo announce a deal wherein Disney will combine Hulu + Live TV with Fubo in a joint venture and Fubo will drop its Venu Sports antitrust lawsuit
The agreement follows a court-ordered pause on Venu Sports after Fubo's antitrust challenge, putting the proposed sports bundle's distribution model under immediate pressure. The temporary Venu block made Fubo both a legal obstacle and a strategically important live-TV partner.
Disney and Fubo will place Hulu + Live TV and Fubo in a joint venture, changing the operating path for Disney's live-TV streaming business and giving Fubo a central role in it.
Fubo will end its Venu antitrust lawsuit, removing the immediate litigation dispute between the companies.
Second-order effects
The settlement reduces one direct barrier to the Venu partners' sports-bundling strategy, though it does not itself establish that Venu will launch or succeed.
For live-TV streaming rivals, the combination concentrates two services around a shared venture, increasing pressure to differentiate through programming, distribution, or bundle design.
Third-order effects
The episode suggests that contested streaming bundles may increasingly be resolved through distribution partnerships rather than standalone product launches and prolonged litigation.
If platforms keep consolidating live-TV offerings while folding entertainment services into broader apps, the key competitive question shifts from standalone subscriber brands to control of the bundle and its customer relationship.
The trend: Live-TV streaming is moving toward consolidation and bundle redesign as media companies balance sports distribution ambitions against antitrust and cannibalization risks.
The headline is the JV, and the end of the Fubo/ Venu lawsuit, but don't overlook that Disney is getting rid of Hulu+Live just like AT&T got rid of DirecTV. Makes sense. Those internet bundles are all terrible businesses.
In connection with the deal, Disney, Fox Corp. and Warner Bros. Discovery will make an aggregate cash payment to Fubo of $220 million. In addition, Disney has committed to provide a $145 million term loan to Fubo in 2026 as part of the transaction. https://variety.com/...
FWIW, Hulu Live is already the second largest live streamer. Adding Fubo, however, would put it closer to YouTube TV which has around 8 million subs. Hulu Live/Fubo would be around 6.5M.
This is going to create additional antitrust legal challenges for both companies. Expect another pay TV company to sue over Venu Sports, and for another party to sue over the Fubo-Disney deal. $DIS $FUBO
scoop: Disney is nearing a deal to combine Hulu + Live with Fubo, forming the 2nd biggest digital pay-TV provider behind Youtube, sources say. As part of the deal, Fubo plans to drop its legal claims over Venu Sports. story w/ @Lucas_Shaw & Palmeri. Link coming shortly $DIS $FUBO
Interesting implications for sports fans here as this would drop Fubo's lawsuit that is blocking the Venu sports offering from Disney, Fox and WBD. Fubo also has been carrying more RSNs compared to Hulu Live TV+.
