Is this just going to be Waymo's market completely then?  Is there another competitor that can provide a serious challenge to them at this point?  And once they have economies of scale, can anyone catch them?  —  www.bloomberg.com/news/article...

Fun fact: GM invested $10 billion in Cruise before pulling the plug.  —  That's more than the federal government will invest in public transit this year in CA, CO, CT, DC, IL, MD, MA, MN, NJ, NY, PA, VA and WA — combined.  —  www.theautopian.com/gm-kills- its...

Have a ton of thoughts, most of which I'll keep to myself, but mostly this is really a shame for the incredible number of smart, talented folks who've done really great work there since the company's inception. https://www.bloomberg.com/...

Today GM pulled funding from Cruise robotaxis. I called this 5 years ago. [1] [2] If you have been paying attention, self driving has played out exactly like I said it would. Tesla will win, and @comma_ai will take second with an open source solution, like the smartphone market

GM is up 2.5% in after-hours trading after announcing to shut down Cruise (its robotaxi attempt), an acquisition Mary Barra approved and on which General Motors' lost over $11 billion. @GM [image]

absolutely brutal 14 months for Cruise... Kind of crazy that a driverless car service I used frequently in 2023 is no longer going to be around (after having burned $8B). [image]

@JackRhysider @comma_ai I met with Elon almost 10 years ago. He is a very clear thinker and had all the same ideas as me, so there's no idea advantage. Tesla has brute strength, 9-9-6 culture, and what did you get done this week. comma has a love of the bitter lesson, refactors, …

@Yuchenj_UW @comma_ai Waymo is actually a cool service! But it's not a self driving car, it's teleop, and it loses a lot of money. However, if Google wants to use it's massive ad revenues to subsidize better public transit for cities, I'm all for it.

$GM Cruise will exit the robotaxi business, a move that will save $GM $1B/year in annual costs. Cruise and GM's technical teams will be combined into a single effort focused on developing autonomous and advanced driver safety technology for future models sold by GM. GM said it

@pitdesi This is a case of what's good for GM (shutting down an R&D heavy division) is actually bad for America (setting back Vision Zero by years.)
  • @benwbear Ben Bear on x
@pitdesi Based on past experience leading an OEM subsidiary, I don't think it's possible for a tech focused acquisition to work unless it's directly tied to the core biz. Too much culture clash on comp, providing upside to employees, attitude toward failure, etc

Epic, hall of fame, $1T fumble of an opportunity by GM. Waymo is going to be ubiquitous, Cruise was the viable alternative, and Elon is likely to nudge Trump on the regulatory path. But GM couldn't take the startup bumpy journey. Big companies. 🙄 https://www.bloomberg.com/...

Given the capital required to bring robotaxis to market, previous management errors @Cruise and China market challenges for GM I'm not surprised General Motors will halt funding Cruise's robotaxi development. #AndThenThereWasOne [image]

Good news for $TSLA and $GOOG. Bad news for $UBER and $LYFT. GM is shutting down their robotaxi efforts because they can't afford the investment and it's getting more competitive. “GM will no longer fund Cruise's robotaxi development work given the considerable time and
