Similarweb: Bluesky app usage in the US and UK grew ~300% to 3.5M DAUs after Nov. 5; Threads now has 1.5x Bluesky's DAUs in the US, down from 5x before Nov. 5

Social media giant's Threads app makes changes as smaller competitor to X surges  —  Meta's Threads is losing ground …

People are fleeing Elon Musk's X in droves. What's happening on Threads and Bluesky?
  • @jaypeters.11 Jay Peters on threads
Bluesky feels like the big winner right now.  But Threads isn't standing by.  My thoughts on the past couple weeks in social media: https://www.theverge.com/...
  • @michaelzanette Michael Zanette on threads
I think it's more due to the bone headed decisions that the theads team is making.  Bluesky feels much more customizable and free to choose what you like.  Threads is becoming more and more for “influencers” https://www.ft.com/...
  • @metasynthesis.net William Gunn on bluesky
Create a place where people want to be and brands and advertising will come.  Threads is trying to do it the other way around, because they have to pretend that interactions with brands are something people want.  No one at Meta can say, “Actually, people hate ads.”  [embedded po…

According to analysis from SimilarWeb, Threads had five times more daily active users in the US than Bluesky, which has just 20 full-time staff and was initially funded by Twitter when Jack Dorsey was its chief executive.  —  Now, Threads is only 1.5 times larger than its rival, …

I can't tell you how different it is on X now after so many people have left.  I have always followed mostly right-wing accounts because I cover them, and they are running out of people to pick fights with.  So they're just mostly fighting with each other.
  • @jamesshelley.com James Shelley on bluesky
Strategically speaking, usage vis-a-vis Threads is all that really matters for @bsky.app now.  A critical mass of the birds already flew the coop and they are still just flying around and trying to sort out what wire to land on together.  [embedded post]

Wow.  On Nov. 5th, Threads had five times more daily active users in the US than Bluesky.  —  Now, Threads is only 1.5 times larger.  —  I can see why Meta is freaking out now  —  Story: www.ft.com/content/e1b5...  [image]

The platform that I want to win the most.  —  Not X - it's no longer even trying.  Buried under the weight of bots and pay-to-play.  —  Not Threads - its approach is misguided, reaching for user that doesn't exist.  —  And between Bluesky and Mastodon - Bluesky protocol design se…

I never bothered with Threads mainly because I never bothered with Instagram.  —  Was that a mistake?  Maybe, but it's sure been a fun few weeks riding Bluesky's surge.  [embedded post]

Take with a grain of salt, though.  Similarweb is fairly trustworthy for some websites, but I've seen it off by huge amounts for sites I've had real numbers for.  —  No question the Bluesky is rapidly growing, though.  [embedded post]

The website vs app split for Bluesky vs Threads captures the difference in user base and usage patterns beautifully.  —  Bluesky = knowledge sector workers who have it open all day in a tab next to their emails.  “Wait what was I doing again?”  —  Threads = normies watching recip…

OK, so I really like #BlueSkye, getting loads of new papers and tools and funnies, but I am pessimistic about the future.  BlueSky may be run by good guys now, but it is centralized (and will probably stay that way).  And they will have to start earning money.  —  dustycloud.org/…

pretty fair breakdown of bluesky's lack of decentralization.  i tend to agree with christine's takes here: bluesky can't really lay claim to being meaningfully decentralized, but embracing ideas like “credible exit” and the company as future adversary are good steps.  dustycloud.…

  • @beeps.gay @beeps.gay on bluesky
The co-author of ActivityPub has done a tear down of how decentralised Bluesky is.  The answer: not very.  —  In fact, the protocol relies almost entirely on Bluesky to operate and many of the current leg-ups it has over the fediverse are because of that centralisation.  —  dusty…
